Fertilization increases tree biomass and SOC, but also changes the response of microbial respiration/SOC to soil moisture and temperature. The change in the temperature response might depend on altered litter quality, but why would the moisture response change too?
Our new study by Ťupek et al (doi.org/10.5194/bg-2...) found that N fertilization lowers soil microbial respiration sensitivity to moisture slowing C loss & enhancing soil C storage in boreal forests. Elisa found that respiration rates scale as the product of organic carbon and microbial biomass, with minimal effects of microbial diversity. This is a cool result, supporting the use of nonlinear kinetics to interpret data at small scales (lab incubation). Great @holisoils.bsky.social team effort!
