ID is about so much more than picking the correct antibiotics
There are many important perspectives and ideas to share in medicine at this moment that are more important than mine. But this is a reminder of why I keep doing what I do, despite everything. I would be honored if you took the time to read it. www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....
Libraries Burned, a Life Lived | NEJM
As her patients near the end of life, an infectious disease physician who knows their stories sometimes needs to step out of her proverbial lane to help them assess and achieve their goals of care.

🦽 Polio: paralysis (1 in 200)
🤒 Measles: pneumonia & brain swelling (1/5 hospitalized)
🎗️ HPV: causes >90% of cervical cancers
⏳ Meningitis: fatal in 10%
😮‍💨 Pertussis: deadly for 1/100 infants
🤐 Tetanus: 10% fatal even with treatment

💉 Vaccines prevent all of this. This is what winning looks like.

🦠Like so many infectious diseases…“We cannot address TB only with vaccines and medications. We cannot address it only with comprehensive STP programs. We must also address the root cause of tuberculosis, which is injustice.” Another 5 ⭐️ read #BookSky #MedSky #TBR @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social

Today is the last day to submit a comment to the FDA demanding the right to choose a Covid vaccine/booster for yourself and your family.

You can submit anonymously and it only takes a few minutes.

They’ve changed course in the face of public outcry before, so make your voice heard!
GUYS. The comment period for this ends in THREE DAYS. PLEASE if you have even a little bit of time, submit a comment here: www.regulations.gov/commenton/FD...

Let them know EVERYONE should be able to get COVID vaccines. They BACK DOWN when WE PUSH BACK. www.statnews.com/2025/05/20/f...

Only in America can the Surgeon General—our nation’s top doctor and health voice—be someone without residency training, board certification, or an active medical license.

Just vibes, wellness influencer status, and no need for the clinical expertise or experience

Beside measles outbreaks, we are likely to see resurgence of:
- HIV
- Tuberculosis
- STIs (Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea)
- A worse flu season
- other vaccine preventable diseases.
Because that's what happens when you gut public health, defund research and promote vaccine misinformation.

Thought provoking article about antibiotic use in end of life care. Did you know that in a systematic review, patients with pneumonia receiving antibiotics had lower scores of symptom management at end of life than those without? 🤯 #medsky #meded #infectiousdisease #palliativecare

🦠 What a great article about how we can comprehensively treat diabetic foot infections, “providing ID clinicians with the opportunity to embrace our roles as masters of IM and complex problem solvers rather than single-faceted antibiotic sommeliers”. #ID #DFI #medbluesky #meded

5/ We didn’t enter this field for fame or fortune, there little of that in ID . We did it to prevent suffering, protect the vulnerable, and apply science to keep people safe. But the hostility we face from politicians to misinformation peddlers is exhausting.

1/ Being an infectious disease expert in the U.S. today feels like standing in the eye of a storm. Science should be our shield, but instead, we’re under attack, our expertise disregarded, our funding slashed, and public health increasingly politicized. 🧵

#NIH just slashed indirect costs caps on grants to 15%--this is a HUGE blow to the research community. While there is certainly inefficiency to the grants system, indirects help institutions support scientists & academic infrastructure. No one will want to do research anymore. #medsky #academicsky
