What kind of web do we want to leave behind: human or machine?

In a new piece I reflect on an alternate universe of hypermedia imagined by four pioneers:

Thinking about using AI personas for user interviews?

Don’t.

Use AI to prep smarter questions, but always talk to real users.

"Technologies like LLMs have utility, but the absurd way they've been over-hyped ... and the insistence on ignoring the many valid critiques about them make it very difficult to focus on legitimate uses where they might add value."

nailed it
One day the industry will recognize the drawbacks of AI agents and nondeterministic automation, and rediscover the UNIX philosophy of chaining together small purpose built tools in a low cost and predictable way, otherwise known as shell scripts.

I've been working with LLMs to create a set of topic-specific "API Coaches".

They're not "teachers" as they ss they 'prompt' the user through a series of questions and recommendations.

i'd love to hear from others who are doing similar things

In 1637, tulip bulbs sold for more than canal houses. Then the market crashed & everyone asked, what were we thinking?

Today’s AI boom feels familiar. We’re trading agents and copilots instead of bulbs, but the mania looks the same.

Passing tests ≠ production-ready.

AI-generated code often hides inefficiency and debt. Don’t confuse correctness with competence.

I get asked all the time: “How should we add AI to our product?”

My answer is simple: Treat AI as a tool, not a feature.

And if you want AI to mean something in your work, put it to work where it counts — in building and sustaining products that last.
