Sir Simon asked the warlock to provide shelter for his horse, though he was somewhat fearful to impose on his generosity. Cyril proved agreeable to the idea and would even shelter the knight as well. That is, in the form of his horse's stablemate.

When turned into a guardian beast, Sir Simon will do anything to protect Cyril and ease his burdens on their journey, even taking on a bipedal form to carry his weak or weary master. Cyril believed him a simple minded beast in this form, so the additional transformation was unexpected.
