A pair of massive, dying stars are casting off shells of dust that are expanding outward at 2,600 kilometers a second -- fast enough that JWST can clearly see the shells expanding in images taken just 14 months apart. 🧪🔭

Context Camera data shows enigmatic infilled troughs at this location. Hypothesis: old yardangs were filled by younger draping material?

In this Webb image, Neptune resembles a pearl with rings that look like ethereal concentric ovals around it. There are 2 thinner, crisper rings and 2 broader, fainter rings. In Space tonight: Like delicate cosmic petals, these clouds of interstellar dust and gas have blossomed 1,300 light-years away in the fertile star fields of the constellation Cepheus. Sometimes called the Iris Nebula and cataloged as NGC 7023, this is not the only nebula in the sky to evoke 🌺

The Andromeda galaxy captured by the Hubble Space telescope
The Andromeda Galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy and is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way. It was originally named the Andromeda Nebula and is cataloged as Messier 31, M31, and NGC 224. Andromeda has a D₂₅ isophotal diameter of about 46.56 kiloparsecs and is approximately 765 kpc from Earth.
