you can unsubscribe from nitro all you want (why the fuck were you subscribed to nitro???) but it doesnt really offset the fact that discord is seen as hugely negligent (because it is) and an increasing number of jurisdictions are age gated

something very striking to me in the announcement was the fact that discord stages are age restricted. i had to double check what those were because ive only heard of them in one context... shitty youtube documentaries describing them as used to groom and sexually humiliate girls and young women

matrix is still aggressively unfriendly. element is element and every other client is worse. stoat is just... when i used it it was very viscous. worse than 2016 discord. its also vibe coded, down to the rebranding post being obviously llm output

and being treated as racially neutral by broader society, other developers, but when a group of black tech workers get together to create a platform and declare outright that they are doing this for the sake of the black community, then they're viewed as ethnocentric for making everything explicit

but the concern with identity here is that social media platforms are run either by explicit white identitarians (twitter) or by people who are part of the white identitarian coalition (meta, google, tiktok) and hire very few black tech workers, while viewing themselves as racially neutral
