It's kinda crazy to remember that the mass protests today got their start (and name) from a tweet about congestion pricing

Great thread about development of Australian suburban rail systems. Wellington closely followed in 1938, but then NZ stalled until Auckland electrified in 2014.
Australian suburban rail is very interesting. Until recently there was no metro (fully segregated, grade-separate frequent rail transit) in Australia: just suburban rail and trams. I will explain the history and operation of these suburban railways. Note regional rail is intrastate intercity rail.

The city truly does not comprehend how suburban rail like GO can be urban rapid transit used by local residents not just a feeder for outsiders. I think this is because North Americans don’t get it. The only examples are an ocean away in Europe and Australia. Australia had no metro because of this!

Started off 5 years ago this week with a lockdown challenge to ride every street within 3km of my house. Kept going in subsequent lockdowns, adding 1km at a time. Now have ridden every* street within 18km of my house, which covers 46% of roads in the Auckland region!
