🌳🍒🫐It's a mast year! 🌳🍒🫐

There's a huge abundance of berries, nuts & seeds on UK trees/shrubs this year. Known as a mast year, certain species produce a bumper crop to increase seed survival, creating a 'prey satiation' effect. The overwhelming abundance ensures some will survive and germinate

Releasing juvenile #freshwater pearl #mussels two channels today, less than 5 metres apart, one spring fed, the other a small side channel of the main stem river (surface water). The spring fed one was 12.5 ºC, the side channel 17.7ºC! That's over 5ºC difference in the space of <5m!

What a wonderful day we had at the @freshwaterbio.bsky.social 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting at Nottingham Trent University. Brilliant discussions on ghost ponds, climate change, pollution, outdoor swimming, being 'activist scientist' and the concept of riverkin. Can't wait to do it again next year!
