The IEA has presented its methane emissions abatement cost curve every year since 2017, highlighting the low cost of action. Methane reduction pledges cover 80% of global oil & gas production, but the data shows rising emissions. [Read my Substack here: lornestockman.substack.com/p/voluntary-...

My first substack! Since the Global Methane Pledge was launched in 2021, oil & gas methane emissions have grown 4.5%, in line with production growth. I trace the history of the IEA’s methane emissions abatement cost curve and question whether voluntary action will ever deliver results.

this is a good and interesting analysis. The IEA has said *for years* that the o&g industry is making progress on reducing methane; that methane reductions would pay for themselves (more gas to sell); and that its low hanging fruit.

Very little evidence of progress. And industry continues to expand
Since 2017, the Int'l Energy Agency has told the world the fossil fuel industry can reduce its emissions of toxic, planet-warming methane at little to no cost to itself. But industry keeps failing to clean up its act. Methane emissions are still rising in lockstep with production. bit.ly/47YXaVt

America's demand for fossil gas is set to increase - no, not for stuff like heating homes or the power grid - but almost entirely due to the fact that sending gas overseas is itself a process that consumes HUGE amounts of gas

Great thread by @ndreschang.bsky.social on the DOE LNG study. The market analysis is a welcome change that shows that LNG increases emissions because it displaces emissions-free energy more than it does coal or gas. This is, after all, the 2020s not the 1990s. The methane analysis? Not so much.
🔑 The DOE analysis ignores the "coal vs. LNG" debate, instead focusing on LNG's market impacts.

If this was strategic, it was good strategy. The old guard "emissions displacement" approach was indefensible. And it foregrounds methane estimation Qs that are still the O&G industry's home turf

From coal to oil and gas to wind and solar, Israel uses its energy supply, much of which is imported, to wage war and entrench its illegal occupation. Time to hold the countries and corporations involved to account.

Israel destroyed 83% of plant life in Gaza by June this year.

It destroyed 70% of its agricultural land.

It damaged or destroyed 65% of water tanks and 47% of groundwater wells.

Israel has deliberately tried to make Gaza uninhabitable. This is genocide.
