An oil painting of a pair of fantastical birds. Grief is an intensely personal process, with an unpredictable trajectory and random re-emergence of emotion. It can ebb and flow, rise and fall, be bitter or be softly sweet. Sometimes grief never ends - just becomes part of our bones. Especially loss without explanation, loss without reason, loss without death (as in abandonment). Grief then has feathers, and roosts and flies and pecks and scratches. I am trying to befriend it, my grief. It likes cookies and naps.

The quote continues: “ how much integrity and authenticity and creative vitality filled these numbered days, these unrepeatable hours” I've been thinking about the third act in a life. ​My life, to be exact. There are people (mostly very wealthy people) who are trying to add multiple acts to a lifespan. And there are people who are more focused on the legacy they will leave behind, be it statues or street names or towers or ballrooms. And we are a society focused on productivity: how much can you do, how much MORE can you do, how fast can you do it. Which leaves very little time or energy for just, well, living. Admittedly, these are things I have the luxury of time, resources and near-retirement to contemplate. But wouldn't it be worthwhile if we directed the ship of our lives toward integrity, authenticity and creative vitality​ from the get-go? I try to imagine how my life would have unfolded if I had not been taught to do more, do better, do faster and instead had been taught to slow down, be curious, be true to myself. ​I don't have all the answers - no, no, NO! An abstracted landscape inspired by a hidden valley we hike in the Columbia River Gorge The quote continues: “Merely to be there was a cure for weariness...Evil things did not some into the secret valley of Rivendell.” Sometimes the places we hike are so beautiful they appear imaginary; torn from the pages of folklore and fairytale and fantasy.
