Baltimore, I am back.

I'll be doing a write-up on the Reform Conference for this week's newsletter, but the event — attended by 1,800 people — made one thing clear: The harm reduction movement is alive and well.

No More Drug War.

News outlets in Baltimore have spread dangerous misinformation about drugs/those who use them, steering the city away from public health-centered solutions and toward fear-driven police crackdowns.

I'm standing in line at the airport, awaiting my flight to an international drug policy conference — so it's ironic that I'm now seeing yet another example of Baltimore's drug-war policing.

As long as this persists, the city's response to the OD crisis will fail miserably.

Trust me, I love writing about drugs; they're kind of my thing. But I also need a vacation.

Although some articles I've written for other publications may be published in the meantime, Mobtown Redux will be on pause until Nov. 22.

ICYMI: There is more money for programs that keep people fed and housed. And politicians do, in fact, have the power to enact life-saving reforms.

But it's a question of political will, and that's often lacking.

For a police department that talks about violence prevention so much, Baltimore cops sure do try to kill Black people a lot. And as we saw this summer, they often succeed.

It's almost as if they are part of an inherently violent and racist institution.

Let's get something straight about medetomidine: It has existed in Baltimore's drug supply for a while now, though it has become more common.

That's at least partly attributed to states banning xylazine. Iron Law of Prohibition, motherfuckers. It's a consequence of crackdowns.
