T’s tactics were always transactional,he played hardball to extract quick wins that looked good for his base. The UK fresh out of the EU & desperate to show it could strike deals, had limited leverage. It felt like damage control. But given the circumstances, it may have been the least worst option.

Plus Trump is an unpredictable negotiator. Even if a deal was close, it could be upended by a tweet or sudden change in stance, making long-term planning harder. 🙆🏻‍♀️

2/2 Waiting for bigger players to set a precedent sounds easy, but politically the UK didn’t have the luxury of time — it needed wins fast to prove Brexit worked. Not impossible, maybe, but a seriously tight corner.
May 8, 2025 at 6:33 PM
1/2 True, the UK’s direct economic exposure to Trump’s tariffs wasn’t as big as for China or the EU. But the issue wasn’t just the tariffs, it was the UK’s weak negotiating position post-Brexit, the urgency to show it could land a U.S. deal & the high cost of U.S. demands (like food standards).
May 8, 2025 at 6:33 PM
2/2 The UK faced a lose-lose scenario at times, either accept damaging concessions to get a deal with Trump, or risk getting nothing while still suffering from tariffs. However, “impossible” may be too strong, as it was more of a high-stakes diplomatic puzzle with limited good outcomes.

1/2 Trump’s protectionism, brexit timing & leverage. Demands from US on farming, pharmaceuticals & regulatory alignment. EU ties & RA, Trump’s volatility.

The Uk was in an impossible situation. It’s easy to criticise from the sidelines.

Just been on X & looked at all the comments! I just had to come over here to see the contrast.😄 X - ‘well he’s just telling the truth’, ‘how is he interfering?’,‘ didn’t labour mps go over & interfere in the US’. They just don’t get what he’s doing. 🤦🏻‍♀️

On X today. I tried several times to post this with tagging Trump in as a sick man. Each time it disappeared. Once I just put DT in it stayed. Just saying. #donaldtrumpisasickman

Fgs! Why the hell did they stop the intelligence sharing in the first place? The people who have died because of that, disgusting. Ukraine has had its hands tied behind its back.
