If you are an academic, use a Mac, and hate that your PDFs all have stupid names, check out www.namemypdf.com. Once installed, you can right-click, open-with NameMyPdf and have the files renamed with their author, year, and title (that you can customize).

The thing I didn't realize at first is that making your handle be domain-based is just a matter of adding a DNS TXT record (which is really easy, even if you don't know what DNS is).
