Our new JMF paper on “silver splits” uses 18 years of dyadic data. We find that:
💡 When a partner was more depressed pre-separation, the other often feels better after.
👫 This effect appears only among men — highlighting gendered effects of later-life separations.

Having children doesn't guarantee happiness for older adults. Learn how parent-child disconnectedness undermines mental health, esp. for married women. @geronmedia.bsky.social @buciss.bsky.social @bostonu.bsky.social @asanews.bsky.social @nacda-icpsr.bsky.social @lisajessee.bsky.social
Excited to share my paper w/ Debby Carr has been published in The Journals of Gerontology: Series B! We find disconnectedness is highest among never-married/divorced men and linked to depressive symptoms, especially for women in first marriages.
