Second reading is complete, and this coming Wednesday, Feb. 4, MPs will vote for the first time on my Private Member’s Bill, the Keeping Children Safe Act (C-223). Endless gratitude to the advocates, experts and survivors who made this happen. We are putting children first.

After a busy week, it was great to be home with my team and checking in with Hamilton Mountain residents. Great conversations as always!

Dozens of supporters & survivors filled the HoC gallery to watch debate on my Private Member’s Bill; the Keeping Children Safe Act. Many have been calling for these massive reforms to the Divorce Act to ensure children are treated like people, rather than property to be split equally in a divorce.

Bill C-16 has a lot in common with my Private Members Bill C-223. The intent of both is to protect children.
Bill C-16, the Protecting Victims Act, would criminalize coercive control, which makes my heart sing.
Debate on 2nd reading of C-223, the Keeping Children Safe Act, continues today, Jan. 28.

Second reading concludes on Jan 28.

On Fridays, staff at Juravinski Hospital wear their Time to Rebuild t-shirts. MP JP Danko & I visited to see how the infrastructure no longer meets the growing needs of residents.
Hamilton Health Sciences has a plan to give every patient privacy, accessible showers & modern heating & cooling.

It has been a busy two days connecting with counterparts south of the border. Trade, transportation and borders are on the agenda on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Lincoln Alexander Day always makes me smile, like Canada’s first Black Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister, and Lieutenant-Governor always did when I was a #HamOnt reporter. I regularly sought his wise reflections while enjoying his affable character. He will never leave Hamilton's proud memory.

Hamilton has long been a muse and a magnet for all disciplines of art and artists, and they all come together at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. As Hamilton Mountain MP and chair of the Federal Heritage committee, it is my duty to ensure the whole country knows this!

Hamilton Mountain's Marney Warby has spent 50 years volunteering to promote boating safety with CanBoat / NautiSavoir. I stopped by with a congratulatory certificate secretly arranged by her husband Ron, and she was impressively surprised! Thanks for your contributions to our community, Marney!

I can attest that the residents of The Village of Wentworth Heights are highly engaged and very knowledgeable about current events. What a fun location for the latest Coffee with Lisa, with robust conversation and cheerful energy. Thank you for hosting!

What an uplifting experience to receive prayers at West Highland Church along with city councillors Tammy Hwang and Rob Cooper. I also loved the compassionate and thoughtful conversation. Thank you for the invitation!

No one in Canada is a more fierce advocate for Korean War veterans than Hamilton Mountain's HooJung Jones, ensuring our veterans get the recognition they deserve, including monuments across the country. I was honoured she chose to award me as a "veteran's advocate;" but I learned it all from her.

One Mountain holiday tradition that always feels good: the Mighty Mateo Toy Drive! Collecting for kids at McMaster Children's Hospital. Started by Mateo while he was battling leukemia. Now his parents continue in his name. An estimated $100,000 collected over the last 13 years!

On the 36th anniversary of the mass femicide at École Polytechnique, I am thinking of my colleague Nathalie Provost, who survived four shots that day, lost 14 peers, and went back to school weeks later, encouraging other women to study engineering. (1/2)

I felt very lucky to congratulate Joe and Mary Martorelli on their Sicilian Heritage Award of Distinction, because they insisted on making me an authentic espresso, feeding me homemade cookies, and best of all, sharing stories from 53 years of marriage. (He made suits for Don Cherry!)

Happy 100th birthday to Elsie Moreton! She says a nice quiet life on Hamilton Mountain, with annual trips to the East Coast, contributed to her longevity. You would never guess she has seen a whole century go by.
