So many stunning skyscapes at Cley today as showers rolled in & around us as the north wind blew. Offshore, well, it wasn't stellar this morning ~ a nice movement of Eider, 15 Little Gulls, a Bonxie, a couple of RB Mergansers, a few C Scoters.

Anterton Hill is the best set of trees in village. I'd already said to folks at Walsey that it was my last roll of the dice & there had to be one here because I had seen one 25 years ago...!

I really didn't want to be distracted by phone grabs of the Pallas's as I wanted to savour the moment. It was such a special moment ~ a Pallas's Warbler on the patch. The patch we do, pretty much, every day. It's not a BB rarity any more, not a county rarity either but when you've hit the wall and running on empty...yup, special moments 😊 It was so close at one point that I did weaken and try and get something just with the phone (no way of following it). There's been frame fillers all weekend of them, so here's the polar opposite 😅 It's in here as well, honest. Arse on, white dot above the main sun burst...

Another breezy but mild night at CMO HQ & a respectable 21/14 including migrant Rusty Dot Pearls & a Diamond-back. Moth of the night, by a considerable margin, was this gorgeous Mottled Umber ~ not sure we've ever had a smarter one👌

One of the nicest sights y'day was watching a local Barn Owls quartering meadows along the edge of the valley. This is a species that still seems to be struggling to return to numbers seen in previous years. One step forward, two steps back...

Last night's roost tallies of Cley egrets ended up with 16 Little & 24 Cattle (flocks of 9 & 15) ~ numbers actually a little lower than expected. Both species show very nicely when they have a pre-roost wash & feed on the scrapes.

I'm getting the word - "jowl".
No bird does a jowl better than Cattle Egret. I remember reading about the CE jowl back in the day (A Twitcher's Diary maybe?) & it stuck. This was one of nine that we saw tonight on Pat's (& the Freshes earlier).

It was, for my Heath Robinson method of capturing shots, a total nightmare. I don't know what I thought I'd achieve with bins/phone or 'scope/phone (bar the awfulness below). So today I've much admiration for the likes of Mike Edgecombe & his lensmanship.

...y'day's shopping/recycling trip coincided w/rain & a double bill of Swift sp. at West Runton. Today a lone bird (new?) was found there by Simon Chidwick & this one was a doozy of a Pallid, looked ace along the undercliff...

...the American Goldie was the warm-up act ahead of the main attraction ~ the gull roost! Maybe 250 more birds than Cley's roost last night: 4 Caspian Gulls (x3 1w, x1 2w) & 3 Yellow-legged Gulls (x2 ad, x1 1w) played 2nd fiddle to the bird of the day...

Highlights galore today. A wander along Meadow Lane offered up nice views of a sometimes showy Siberian Chiffchaff (no call heard, but looked the part) but a random 45 minute westerly movement of 15 to 20 Red Kites absolutely stole the show.

We strayed out of the Cley Square this afternoon & headed to Titchwell. It's been a decade or so since I saw a juvenile American Golden Plover in Norfolk & although the bird today was generally distant & frequently hidden, it was still a smart bird to see.

No doubting the highlight of a very entertaining walk around the back of the patch was finding this Common Crane heading west over Sea Pool, Arnold's Marsh & away over the reserve mid-morning ~ pretty sure this is my first November Grus at Cley.

Really pleased to find 3 new Caspian Gulls in a modest-sized roost on the North. An almost adult/4w was in first, followed by two 1w birds (one a real snazzy looker). Interesting to see a still largely juvenile LBBG with the 4w/adult cachinnans.

Absolutely loved seeing these two 1st winter Caspian Gulls together tonight on the North. For all the cachinnans I've seen here over the last 30 years, I don't often see Caspo side-by-side, so this was a real Larid treat.

Like snowball baubles on a tree, the glowing figures of Cattle Egrets stood out, even from North, as they hurried into North Foreland tonight. Lynnette picked them up as they came across the reserve, a minimum 30 in all, off the Freshes I guess.

The Glossy Ibis invasion ground to a halt a little while ago but we've still got a few around the Cley square. These three were out on the North this evening ~ they always seem a bit bemused when skeins of Pinks drop in & make a roost racket.

After a cracking morning, we headed out for the North Scrape roost & it was cracker there too! Triple Glossy Ibis & Caspian Gull, a minimum 30 Cattle Egrets, 1000 Pink-feet (oh & the Ruddy Shelduck too). Here's the dusk view from Gillmor Hide.
