There weren’t many people around early enough to catch us shooting with this beautiful sky. Sylvia made a great silhouette against the beautiful background sky. When we are touring locations we very often have to force ourselves out early in the morning to get the sunrise and beautiful soft light in the morning , then we have to whole day to explore when realistically the sun is too bright to make the best pictures , until later in the day we go out and shoot again in the golden evening light. Contrary to popular belief we don’t and can’t do pictures all day long so we get a great opportunity to explore the places we visit. Ibiza was a genuine surprise for me as once out of the main party towns the smaller resorts and the rest of the island has a really great lifestyle and vibe.

Incredible pose by Joy as she literally folded herself in to the chair and melted on to the floor. I’ve seen many versions of a similar concept but none has quite matched the 90 angle and if anyone did then hats off to you , because it’s a truly impressive level of flexibility

Everyone always heads for Amsterdam it seems when visiting the Netherlands but there are also many beautiful towns and cities with canals and beautiful bridges to visit which in many ways are just as beautiful. I found this amazing apartment in Utrecht which is one of my favourite destinations in the Netherlands although I hadn’t realised quite how bright yellow the interior would be. We had pretty miserable weather so it was not a very bright day but the yellow interior woodwork gave the light a golden tone which is lovely and warm. The authentic old fashioned furniture in the room was great to add to the whole atmosphere and Sylvia loved posing on this chair. Take the time to visit the rest of the Netherlands , it is well worth it and the train service is amazing … of course you can rent a car but the train is amazingly reliable and punctual and very easy to use. The main station in Utrecht feels more like an airport terminal than a train station

This beautiful path was quiet for just long enough for us to get a set of pictures with Romi choosing different poses. In this one she just crunched up in a ball and I love the effect. Two minutes later and there were people walking down the path but by then Romi had quickly slipped on a black soft dress and we wandered along as if nothing happened. I was using my 70-200 lens at its maximum so I was actually a good 20 metres away from Romi lying on the ground to get this angle and perspective with the field of focus just around Romi and everything else just softly blurred.

I love a portrait where the subject is obviously deep in contemplation or there is a story there for what they might be thinking. The eyes are not engaging directly to you so you have options to imagine what the scenarios is. Capture a model dreaming and it’s immediately a much more interesting pose for me. I. This one Louisa is sat on a set of drawers that were in front of the wi Dow in her bedroom and we cleared the top and then she just jumped up and sat in the window. I was able to get space by standing in the doorway and using a long lens to get very little distortion in the picture.

One final picture from this set of Carla singing ting in the doorway. I do like the contrast in this set , I remember being concerned there was not enough light in the shadow of the building because in reality it was a very bright sunny day and having been out in the sunny garden this corner seemed very dark and in shadow. But as always the camera adjusted better than the eye ( you know the effect if you look at the sun, then it takes a while for you to be able to see properly again) … and after a few pictures I could see the contrast on the back of the camera. It took a while but finally my eyes also adjusted. And when we went back out in the sun it all seemed so bright again !!

I was staying in a hotel just outside Barcelona and Sylvia came to do a shoot because it had some great features … including a piano out in the main hall. The windows however were great so of course we started and did a few portraits on this old chair. And after exploring all the options in the room we decided to sneak out in to the landing with the piano and do some pictures on the piano … it was only as the door clicked shut that I looked up and said “Oh no , did you bring the key “. Sylvia gave me one of those “are you absolutely stupid” looks as she stood naked holding only a white bedsheet and I realised that I’d managed to lock us out of the room. Many people’s immediate thoughts might have been to go down to reception and get another key but since there was nobody around we couldn’t get one so we took advantage and just got on with doing pictures on the landing until finally we really realised the gravity of the fact that Sylvia was literally without any clothes and we had no way of getting back in the room until the hotel reception returned several hours later …. After a little while I realised that there were balconies between the rooms and that if I could get in to a room next door I could climb over and get in through the window if I’d left it open. We discussed the idea and decided it was our best option so I started knocking on doors and luckily the room next door was occupied and a sleepy guy answered the knock. After explaining our predicament he let me in and I was able to climb over the balcony, luckily we werent on the top floor so I just didn’t look down and was able to get in the room through the window and open the door to let Sylvia back in ..I must admit when we got back in there we burst out laughing. I’m pretty sure the guy next door didn’t believe a word out our explanation as to why Sylvia was completely naked with just a sheet covering her, even though I had my camera with me at least. So this picture holds special memories for us

I was lucky enough to work a couple of times at a studio in Weymouth in the UK which had a number of traditional studios with light equipment and sets and also was attached to an old disused brewery that provided some really cool old windows and natural light urbex feeling. This capture was on the top of the stairs leading to the studio and just couldn’t resist the window lighting and as always Marmalade strikes the perfect pose standing nude in the edge of the window with her arms folded across her body. We did also do a few pictures in the studio but to be honest by then in my history as a photographer I had already fallen in love with shooting totally natural light and specializing in that , so the best captures we did were in the brewery with no other lighting than the dusty old windows.

I really like that you can post sets of pictures to showcase more the creativity of the model because once I’m set up, you can see how Aliah has chosen different poses and I’ve just captured them as she has the freedom to do what she feels. The only thing is I don’t think it’s as effective to post as a set in the feed so I’ve added the rest of the set in the comments. Aliah was doing modeling for fun and as a hobby and had never really worked in a studio like this before , in fact I’ve not seen her active since so maybe it put her off for life 😅 !! But she was really creative and I think really blossomed when she had the chance. She always added her own touch to each pose. If you are not viewing these on a computer , I’d strongly recommend turning the phone 90 degrees and looking at them in the landscape view because I think they are much more striking that way ….

Each time I post a picture from this set I probably mention that it is the basement boiler room of a quite large office building.. but somehow it looks like it could easily be the boiler room of an old battleship !!! This is the black and white version of the picture as Natascha battles with the valve handles. I think it is a really great initiative by the Dutch government to allow and encourage the use of the empty office buildings for small businesses to rent on a temporary basis. It gives a cheap place to lease and help for smaller startups and for building owners it gives a small income for what would otherwise be an empty building until they find someone to move in the whole building A win win for both It was definitely a great place for a photography studio with so many areas as corners to shoot. When we were shooting on the roof we soon discovered we had an audience from the building next door where there were a whole team of roofing contractors working. We ended up finishing after just a few pictures as all the contractors just stopped working and gathered to watch. Even though they were over the road it was still very off putting so since we had the whole building to explore, why waste time on the roof.

At various points during Covid when no one could “officially” leave their homes, we were lucky enough to have a homemade natural light studio where we could keep creating and so our ideas and productivity continued all through the lockdown. I know we were in a very fortunate position and even though this picture was taken before Covid struck, it’s taken at home in front of a huge floor to ceiling window with a soft white curtain to control the harshness of the sun and provide a gorgeous light. Sylvia created a 50s style look with a black dress and pearls and we created a minimal set with candles and took an amazing number of photos in just a few minutes. Of course it always helps having an amazing model always full of ideas for posing too …. But you know sometimes you make your own luck 😊

All done with natural light only , the window is behind me and the camera settings highlighted just the light in Sylvia’s body and then with editing the background was darkened even further. Sylvia is actually lying on a table and her hair is falling down , and then we have turned the picture upside down to produce the affect of her hair flying. This picture actually ended up on the wall of a hairdresser that saw it and wanted it for their Salon along with a few other of our black and white pictures.

Almost like a magazine cover , Charlotte sits in the bay of the window wearing just an oversized jumper and the light softly paints down one side The great thing about the blinds is that you can use them to control the amount of light shining in. Charlotte was a friend of another model I was shooting with and she tagged along to have a holiday in Amsterdam but I took the opportunity and asked her do some work haha 😆

This portrait of Amber and Charlotte was done from standing on a chair with the two of them staring up at the camera. There are beautiful catchlights from the windows in both of their eyes as they both look straight at you. no flash or additional lighting was needed it’s just the windows … I quite like to throw in a portrait or two just to keep life interesting and see who is concentrating ..🤪

Marmalade took me to this place to do my first shoot with her , to be honest I hadn’t been to many urbex sites and this was like a real adventure. Looking back I wish we had stayed there all day taking pictures but at first I was a little shocked because everything seemed so dark and dusty and broken down. I was thinking it would be hard to find anywhere to take anything decent. But it’s these type of trips that really teach you how to look for light opportunities and how to set up the camera to get the balance in the picture right. The UK has some really great old buildings still without too much graffiti and with broken down old character. Long ago they still created factories with character and arches and beautiful windows … compared to modern factories they were works of art 🖼️ For this picture the main light came from the window above the door , but there was also some light from the left hand side window which was very dusty but you can see the touch of light if you look on Marmalades knee and feet..
