Young entrepreneurs flex with flax to fix climate
Opinion: There are many things we can do ourselves to reduce the impact we have on the environment, writes Lianne Dalziel

My latest newsroom.co.nz column reminds us that Labour Day is about recognising workers rights. I watched the movie, Pike River, to commemorate the day and to honour the 29 lives that were lost almost 15 years ago. Their deaths were avoidable. When will we learn? newsroom.co.nz/2025/10/29/c...

My latest Newsroom.co.nz column reflects on the last day of hearings on the pay equity changes, which one submitter called ‘a ramraid no one was expecting’. You can continue to follow the work of the People’s Select Committee online www.payequity.org.nz.

My Newsroom.co.nz column reflects on the challenges posed by social media when trying to debate serious issues. newsroom.co.nz/2025/09/17/c...
Charlie Kirk's pro-gun views mustn't stifle gun control debate
Opinion: With proper background checks many of the perpetrators of the 300 mass shootings in the US this year would not have been allowed anywhere near a gun, argues Lianne Dalziel

My newsroom.co.nz column again reminds us that anniversaries are important opportunities to reflect - when will we ever learn newsroom.co.nz/2025/09/03/t...
The sad after-effects of Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 Christchurch earthquake
Opinion: The devastation in New Orleans in 2005 and the earthquake that preceded the deadly one in Christchurch in 2011 were both missed opportunities to learn from

My latest @Newsroom.co.nz column repeats the question ‘when will we ever learn’? The terms of reference for any Royal Commision of Inquiry should be subject to a transparent process. We need to look back not to blame but to understand if we are to learn the lessons of the decisions that were made.
Opinion: What is the point of hearing from government politicians of the day? The inquiry has already received all the information it needs from them, writes Lianne Dalziel
A Covid inquiry blame game will teach us nothing

My latest Newsroom.co.nz column was written after the first day of hearings of the People’s Select Committee to hear evidence about the changes that were made to pay equity without a parliamentary select committee. newsroom.co.nz/2025/08/13/t...
'This helps make the struggle for pay equity real'
Opinion: The first day of hearings at the people's select committee heard from those groups who had their claims wiped out overnight with no consultation, let alone notice, writes Lianne Dalziel

My @Newsroom.co.nz column asks again when will we ever learn? 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima on Wednesday and Nagasaki tomorrow. I visited both cities this year and they have left a deep impression as cities dedicated to peace. newsroom.co.nz/2025/08/06/l...
Lessons from Hiroshima 80 years on
Opinion: We must use this anniversary to ask what we can do to stop nuclear weapons ever being used again. The stakes have never been higher.

My latest @newsroom.co.nz column asks for better approach to natural hazards and managed retreat. The recommendation that the government announce a stop to buyouts in 20 years has our attention but it’s not the answer. We need to work out a better way together newsroom.co.nz/2025/07/16/n...
Now we're paying attention, how should we manage retreat?
Opinion: The idea that we should not expect the government to bail out homeowners in the event of climate disasters has sharpened minds at last, writes Lianne Dalziel

My @newsroom.co.nz column isn’t about an operation I had just over 20 years ago. It’s a warning from Charity Hospital founder, Phil Bagshaw, about the privatisation of public health system. There are huge risks associated with proposed 10 year contracts with private hospitals. This is important
Comment: Thank goodness Health NZ revealed the redacted sections the health minister did not want to disclose about the risks associated with using private hospitals to reduce public sector waiting lists for planned surgery

Last week’s @Newsroom.co.nz column highlights the importance of shedding light on the pay equity changes that were not able to be publicly scrutinised. The irony of a delay in responding to my OIA request due to the need to consult was not lost on me!
The workplace relations minister has decided to delay her response to my request for information about options she was given for navigating current pay equity claims and a future approach to pay equity

My @newsroom.co.nz column led me to look at pay equity changes and suggests that when there is no regulatory impact analysis and no supporting evidence, a budget-sensitive decision is going to raise serious questions about process and motive.
Comment: The move in the 90s from collective bargaining to individual contracts made it difficult to address systemic gender discrimination. And now, once again, it seems to be about the money saved rather than equity, writes Lianne Dalziel
Ramming through retrospective repeal of pay equity is unacceptable

My @newsroom.co.nz column analyses aspects of Netflix drama series Adolescence. It’s a powerful drama but, in my opinion, not an educational tool for secondary schools. It raises many complex issues that would be challenging to address in the classroom
Comment: It's understandable why British PM Keir Starmer has endorsed Netflix making its phenomenally successful drama available free to schools, but more harm than good could result, argues Lianne Dalziel
'Adolescence' is a drama, not an educational tool

Heathrow closure a timely wake-up call for NZ

On 6th anniversary of terror attack on mosques in Ōtautahi Christchurch. We will never forget March 15, the shuhada, those injured and their families, but forever hold to the response inspired by peace, love, compassion and unity. I wrote this last year newsroom.co.nz/2024/03/13/m...
Mosque attacks inquest a court of understanding, not of blame
Opinion: Nothing can bring back the 51 people killed in Christchurch five years ago, but changes we could make as a result of the inquiry could save lives in the future, writes Lianne Dalziel
