We support low-income workers in California by helping to ensure fair treatment in the workplace. We provide free legal services and advocate for policy changes that fight against injustice and systemic barriers to equity.

Hi 👋 We’re Legal Aid at Work, a nonprofit that advocates for low-paid and marginalized workers in CA and helps them understand their workplace rights. As workers face unprecedented attacks by abusive employers and the federal government, we’re committed to protecting their rights.
California’s Fair Chance Act helps ensure a record isn’t a permanent barrier to work. But true justice means going further: ending the exploitation of incarcerated workers with disabilities, many of whom earn pennies an hour without accommodations.

Big news for CA workers: Starting Jan. 1, employers can’t use “stay-or-pay” contracts to trap workers in jobs by threatening to make them pay training costs, exit fees, or other penalties for leaving before their contract ends.

Last weekend, our staff joined advocates from across CA at the CELA Conference. We’re grateful for the chance to learn, connect, and strengthen the worker justice movement.

It was especially interesting to hear how courts have interpreted pro-worker legislation championed by our partners.

Trump just called off his plan to deploy federal agents to the Bay Area this weekend, but we’re still concerned about a future escalation. Let’s be clear: a surge of federal agents is not about safety; it’s about state-sanctioned intimidation.

Thank a worker on #LaborDay!

Workers, especially immigrant and union workers, ARE the American economy. Yet today, they face relentless attacks from federal lawmakers. We’re proud to champion the rights of all workers and help build a future where every person can earn a living wage with dignity.

Today is #NHPIEqualPayDay. NHPI women must work EIGHT extra months to earn what white men made last year. 63¢ to the dollar is not equality—it’s injustice. We’re proud to fight for pay equity and the dignity all workers deserve.
