New bioRxiv preprint! We propose a viscosity-mediated signal amplification mechanism for left–right symmetry breaking in the mouse node. Secreted macromolecules boost near-surface viscosity, amplifying torque on sensory cilia.

New on arXiv! In the ordered phase of polar active fluids, we identify two types of hydrodynamic instabilities and uncover four critical points, including two new nonequilibrium criticalities -> Roadmap for discovering new universality classes. With P Jentsch @embl.org
