The first two photos show my Granda Patton. The second two show my daddy Bill Patton (his son). I’m proud of the ship-building men in my family, who suffered and died to build the ships that made Harland and Wolff famous. This is my history.
Constance Markiewicz - when Ireland needed her best to put their lives on the line, Constance didn't hesitate. A remarkable woman. The hero that Ireland needed.

I would absolutely love it if Yayoi Kusama and Marimekko produced a capsule collection together. What an absolute joy that would be 🥰
Their vibe is just so sympatico ❤️

This…has made my day

There’s always next year, Trump. Perhaps 😐

I was *very briefly* confused as to why this sunglasses-wearing, moustachioed fella had such a long neck. Thought it was just another ‘AI gone wrong’ deal.
Then I just zoomed in and was disappointed by the normality of both of the Trump cheerleaders/ navy guys 😐

Weird late 90s memory unlocked this morning watching Frasier - the red sign says “Please no smoking in the waiting room”. The waiting room is in a maternity ward 😱Halcyon days 😐
Then…I saw the sign in black behind them -“If you need assistance in paying for your hospital stay…” Shivers.

I’ve always loved the mystery of the second, already lit, cigarette just dangling on the table edge. It’s a really wonderful scene of contentment before the storm of the new day ahead.
Love this painting (and I’m a non-smoker 😊)

It only takes five minutes to find out why this region is called NORTH Karelia.

Russia has flexed far too many times against this great nation.

The Finns know the score. They know exactly what’s at risk. They stand proudly with Ukraine. All power to them. Sisu.

Finland builds fence at eastern frontier, now a critical Nato border with Russia
In North Karelia the border guard is training conscripts, the only road crossing is empty – but there is still some limited cross-border cooperation

Fyi, Angie Lewin fabrics and wallpaper designs are available at www.stjudesfabrics.co.uk/collections/...

Her work is stunning and just a metre of fabric allows you to have a small portion of her genius in your home 😊
(Other fantastic printmakers are available at St. Judes too ❤️)

I had to rewind BBC2 news headlines (11.30am) today as I couldn’t believe my eyes with theseTrump Putin photos.

Putin looks like a corpse, made to look like a living human by an undertaker’s cosmetic artist.

Trump looks like…I…I…just don’t know…definitely Gene Wilder era Oompa Loompa adjacent.

The more I read about this the more disgusted and angry I get that it was all such an ugly open secret. From the ‘90s.
How on earth can Trump walk away from all of this. How can Maxwell possibly be considered a ‘victim’ of Epstein herself? It’s just soul-crushing.

This entire article is exquisite.

Mr Reisley absolutely knows what makes a house a home:
"We never said to the kids, be careful, don't damage the wood or anything. They did what kids are going to do and it was all fine"

Long live NPR, a gem of a public broadcaster.

Roland Reisley is the last original client of Frank Lloyd Wright, still living in the Usonian home designed by the famed architect. Even after 73 years, he told NPR, he still marvels at the beauty of the home.

The Dolly Partons of their time. Literally ❤️
During the 1930s, the US "book women" of Kentucky, aka "packsaddle librarians," delivered books to remote and isolated communities in the Appalachian Mountains on horseback, riding in rain, snow or heat ...#WomensArt

The Daily Mail absolutely disgusts me.

Their framing of an important story as ‘migrants secretly smuggled into the UK by the UK government’ hides an absolutely heartbreaking truth:
It was a secret operation because they aided UK troops and a data leak put their lives at risk.

Watching Billy Joel at the BBC on iPlayer.

Living for a Joel update of ‘We Didn't Start The Fire’ to cover 90s until now.

Just saw on screen that he was inspired to write it after chatting to Sean Lennon about how the world’s always been in a mess.

What an absolute banger that song is.

This was an act of terrorism, right? Right?

This whole story felt very ‘downplayed’ on the news yesterday.

Violence against women is downplayed far too frequently. It is a national emergency.

I just watched a clip of this on the BBC 10 o’clock news.
Almost unbelievable. Almost.

Thoughtful tributes from King Charles, Keir Starmer…*this incredible scene*…then Macron’s heartfelt words.

Trump World continues to shine in the darkest moments for humanity (sarc).
Shout out to the camera operator who had the opportunity to frame the Easter Bunny out of this shot of Donald Trump doing his most serious face in praise of the deceased Pope Francis but chose not to

Chapeau

This. Every single day ❤️
Since we’re all talking about it I want to blow up a real female space pioneer, Mae Jemison, an actual astronaut. She’s a graduate of Stanford and Cornel Medical School, served in the peace corps, started an educational nonprofit, and worked for the CDC researching vaccines. That’s a woman in space

This is exquisite. The idea, the execution, the detail (e.g. Trump’s Z lapel badge)…all of it.

Chilling, but exquisite.

Moreton Morland plays a blinder - again.

Yes, but…were any of these Inuit women sponsored by an Isle of Skye whiskey company? No? Then their trek across their own lands is null and void. Finders keepers, eh?

“privilege and ignorance” is correct.

Feels like a new era for privilege and ignorance.

It’s so important to read through the comments that people took time to write under Duncan’s original post re:WWII heroes.

Their sacrifices must never be forgotten.

I fear that the horror (and bravery) of our WWI heroes has already mostly disappeared from the minds of the living as time marches on
Both my grandads did. One for the UK, the other for the US. The UK one fought in Egypt, and came home with a permanent arm and face tan, which never went away!
-and the US grandad was a Colonel in the US Army, and fought a brutal campaign with Filipino guerrillas, behind enemy lines against Japan.
If you don't mind a personal question, Duncan - you & I are roughly the same age & my grandfather fought in ww2 - I was just curious if you had relatives who did?

My grandfather had nothing but respect for the Brits & he took me to England whrn I was 10. I'm a bit of an anglo-wannabe-phile.

Absolute and comparative advantage and specialisation are anti-American concepts now it seems.
Those woke free trade economists, eh? Update those Econ 101 courses asap.

American exceptionalism continues to be the poison that pollutes the entire world.
Lutnick: "What's happened to the world is the global governments have backed taking our factories away from us. I mean, there's nothing about Taiwan that they should be making semi-conductors. There's nothing about Korea that they should be making all the appliances."

Theres is superb.

There’s a touch of The Holy Grail about this…and I’m here all day for it.

I’m sure the present Harbourmaster at Margate has heard much worse ☺️
