Update: I am now a freelancer! I left Reuters so that I could pursue new paths and projects and I will continue to freelance for them in the future. I am a professional photographer/videographer, I have a drone license, recent HET certs and I am also getting into the safety instructor space.
Intro: I'm a photojournalist with a background in newspapers before joining Reuters. I've covered small feature stories, national and international protest movements, climate change, breaking news, conflict and so many other things in between. I'll be posting my work here and on IG. #photojournalism
Ppl are only reading headlines and chomping at the bit to tear mainstream media apart. While at the same time sharing info, photos videos gathered by people who work for the same orgs. Complex/critical thinking does not mix well with social media.
It’s old-fashioned to defend mainstream journalism these days but some of the most reliable reporting from people actually on the ground will be the AP and Reuters the next 24 hours. Your Substack journalist writing takes will be using frontline reporting from them.

I worked in the WH travel pool for 7.5 years. Based on that report without any other info, I don’t see how they are “giving up on their jobs”. Please clarify.
The WHCA just collectively, consensually gave up on doing their jobs huh?
These are ALL WH pool reports from today.

As we enter into the new year, we are thinking a lot about what “protect the press” means. The obvious is PPE, training, education, safety advisors. Not so obvious: uplifting each other online. Sharing stories about our amazing colleagues while they are still alive. Not tearing each other down.

Does anyone check anything anymore? It took me two seconds with google to find this. What am I missing?

There are more impactful ways as a journalist to report information than asking questions at pressers. There are a lot of extremely talented journalists on the immigration beat. Start with www.nytimes.com/by/hamed-ale...

This is what journalism is most of the time: going to events like the county board of supervisors meeting. Support local journalism!

Dear fellow media covering mass shootings in the U.S.: I have a few thoughts on how to minimize harm. First of all, this is not a media-bashing post. Because we are not a monolith, change within our industry can take a long time.
Second, as evidenced by the stories reported that there are...

Copy editors are the nurses of journalism. We’d be dead without them.

I’m not sure people realize this boycotting is doing nothing to change the opinion section which is different from editorial. It is however causing mass layoffs in the rest of the newsroom. Congrats, y’all are killing good journalism at a time when we really can’t afford to lose good journalism.
WaPo is no longer an option that I feel good about but I want to continue getting a physical paper delivered to my house as I've done my entire life. The other options seem to be NYT, WSJ and USA Today. Should I subscribe to USA Today?? I must be truly desperate if I'm even considering this

I have a theory that print will come back. People crave the lack of distraction and nothing is monitoring what you’re reading, how long you read it, etc. maybe I’m dreaming.
This is awesome. Print is such a good way to get around a bunch of distribution (and surveillance!) mechanisms that seem otherwise mandatory in this very gross economy. It is really nice to see it spelled out like this.

It works great for us, and it'll work great for other places!
404 Media is making a print zine! About the surveillance technologies used by ICE. 16 pages, riso printed. Shipping early January. Features reworked versions of our best reporting and a few new things. We're very excited! And hope to do more if people like it:

Same old genre of posting a photograph taken by someone, sometimes at great personal risk, to share information and yet the photographer’s name is left out.
a new genre of photo in the last year is federal agents working for ICE pointing guns directly at photographers
