I write about what leadership actually feels like—burnout, doubt, pressure, and the weird joy of getting it right once in a while.
New article based on some random encounters this weekend.
The Light was Red, Asshole... And other thoughts on Integrity.
I was heading to the grocery store this morning, gathering ingredients for a new ATK test recipe.

You can’t enforce integrity with a handbook.
You model it. You explain it. You make the invisible visible.
And when you hold someone accountable, you do it with your own integrity intact.

The best leaders I’ve worked with ask questions. The worst ones already have the answers.

Your strongest management qualification is not knowing it all. It's being willing to admit what you don't know. Don't be afraid to ask questions!

Good leadership is so much more draining than people expect. I believe it's because of the emotional regulation involved. You've got to stay calm and thoughtful even when you're just ready to throw the laptop and be done.

“Utilize” is what people say when they want to sound smarter than they are. You didn’t utilize a system. You used it. Act smarter instead of trying to sound smarter. It'll help your career.

You can’t fix bad culture with pizza or a "fun activity". Culture comes from what leadership does, who they promote, what they tolerate, and the behaviors they demonstrate. Are you having a culture problem? Look in the mirror. #leadingwithoutbs #organizationalculture #pizzaparty

The best manager I ever had would stand up for me even when I wasn't in the room. Sometimes defending your team costs political capital when upper management needs to blame someone. Surprisingly few leaders will spend that capital. #leadingwithoutbs #management

Thinking about writing something based on the Simon Sinek quote that goes something like, "Be the leader you wish you'd had." What would you say to your earlier self? I'd tell myself to spend more effort on developing people instead of processes. #leadingwithoutbs #managementherapy

I don’t trust leadership advice from people who’ve never had to fire someone. #leadingwithoutbs

If you don’t sometimes wonder whether you’re a terrible manager... Well, congratulations, you might be a sociopath. #leadingwithoutbs #badmanagers

The best leaders I’ve ever worked for were honest. Even when it hurt. Even when it was hard. There’s a lot more to the job, but when I think about my favorites that’s what I remember most.

Just published my first post on what leadership really feels like. No hustle porn, just honest thoughts. If you've ever asked, “Who the hell put me in charge?” this one's for you.
Who the Hell Put Me in Charge?
Why I think I’m a good leader in spite of everything.
