Yeah, I think there's a power in sort of shameless taking and pushing. There's a line in Get in the Van where Rollins says “I learned that you can get away with a lot of shit if you just do it like it’s all you knew how to do."

*takes drag off cigarette* Yeah, like, you probably just don't GET Whiskey Fridays like me, you know? It's kinda underground. Not everyone knows about it. You have to DM them for the address, and they'll only give it to you if they, like, know you. Maybe I'll see you there, if you get the address.

Right? And as a city person who has mostly lived in small towns for a while- the opposite is also true! Lots of us who live in small towns came there from the city for work, or school, or their partner, or to retire. The reddest small town I lived in went like 60/40 for Trump and had a gay bar.

Yeah, if I were going to make a prediction- and I think it's still too far out to have a good one- I suspect that once we're to the actual primary, he won't distinguish himself when people are paying attention and it's not just about posting anymore. I think the Newsom hate will bite him.
January 15, 2026 at 2:14 PM
I should add that I'm not convinced that this means there won't be someone else who swoops in and claims the nom over him- we've got a long way to go and the primary is when it counts.
January 15, 2026 at 2:12 PM
And he's currently polling as the (or a) frontrunner for 2028 among the general populace in the polls I've seen so far. I'm not a Newsom fan but he has figured out... *something* about how to break through in a way others haven't, for better or worse.

Those Xotic boosters are great for both guitar and bass.

Just watched this with my kid and the load screen part and the Chibimoon low kick part are the hardest he's ever laughed at anything in his life. Also, my 7 year old wandered in at the exact right moment to learn the phrase "beating the crap out of Chibimoon."

I definitely don't disagree with that, but I also don't think you can rely on the economy to deliver that. I think it's incumbent on a variety of actors in society (Dems, media figures, activists, etc.) to make the case for that on a variety of measures up to and beyond the economy.
January 13, 2026 at 2:53 PM
...I mean, Trump lost the popular vote in the 2020 election by 7 million votes (about 51% to 47%) and the electoral college 306 to 232. He won in 2024 by 2 million votes (about 49% to 48%). I'm not saying "be complacent" or "don't organize" or "don't message" but the "barely" was 2024, not 2020.
January 13, 2026 at 2:47 PM
Yeah, he spent nearly all of 2017-2020 polling at or below where he is now, even with a comparatively strong economy. You can just go look that up! There's a whole wikipedia page on it! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion...

There's a whole Kind Of Person whose understanding of the world is all discourse: some people say this, some people say that, without any referent to things actually *happening*, or *power*, or the *outcomes* of said discourse. We've elevated a lot these people people to positions of prominence.

My dentist and the hygienist today asked me what I thought of ChatGPT. I mentioned the hallucinations. They'd never heard about it, so I explained it to them pretty straight, and they were both horrified. The idea that it could, potentially, make up an author, make up an article, etc., shocked them.

The comparisons to other presidents is... a rich text, to say the least, for like 9 different reasons.
January 7, 2026 at 3:43 PM
Come on. That's a pretty bad faith reading of that post, I would argue, which is *clearly* saying that liberals and leftists (however defined) should understand themselves on the same side, here.

I have a vivid memory of my friend and I getting a copy of Cowboys From Hell (we had heard Vulgar Display first) and when Phil does the high vox on some songs sitting in my room, mouths agape, trying to understand why they would have done that.

It's a bit memory-holed how passe something like Maiden or Priest sounded in the mid-90s. I was vaguely into those bands in an "I acknowledge they're important" way, but Metal-With-Melody-And-Singing was hair band-coded in 1994. We, thankfully, got over that as a society, but it was a thing then!
January 6, 2026 at 8:14 PM
I'm the exact right age to get into Fight before I ever heard Judas Priest. There was about a year or two of my life where Judas Priest was, genuinely, "Rob Halford's old band" to me.

I think this is correct. Marvel was at its height when each new release was something of an event and even if the movie was mid, it still *mattered.*

When people talk about "elite decadence" they often mean like drugs or orgies or garish homes, but I think it's now just as likely to manifest as bespoke, post-materialist, stove-touching, galaxy-brained ideologies. Thought experiments you get to indulge in because your feet never touch the ground.
December 20, 2025 at 4:09 PM
Yeah, this is my vibe. They know people aren't going to *watch* the "debates" they make, but people *will* share clips of them, share ads for them, etc. It's geared less towards the actual product and more at inserting itself into the discourse. The show is the bait to get us to talk about the ads.
