"Through the gospel is presented this promise of God's kindness in Christ our Lord, that through Him He means to be all things to us, forgive our sins and make us partakers of eternal life." - Bucer

The whole of our restoration and salvation [comes] from a firm faith in God's kindness towards us in the satisfaction made by the Lord Jesus Christ, wrought by the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

"It is hardly freedom at all to embrace evil instead of good; it is rather the error and bondage of Satan."

"At the creation the morning stars sang together and all the children of God rejoiced.

At the birth of Christ the multitude of heavenly hosts raised the jubilee of God’s good will.

On the birthday of the church that church itself sings the wonderful works of God in myriad tones."

"We are ushering in a dangerous new politics, a sort of hedonic utilitarianism in which the convenience of adults ... [trumps] the lives of the young & old. This is the pagan philosophy, with its cult of strength, which Christianity banished but is now returning"

@ericortlund.bsky.social's commentary on Ecclesiastes is absolute vanity.

(I hope he gets the joke).

The last three chapters especially, and the last chapter above all. Brilliant.

"Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to have you".
Luke 22:31.

Fascinatingly, the "you" is plural in the Greek. Satan wasn't just demanding Simon, he wanted all the disciples.

But what he wants, he doesn't get.

Pity the nations, O our God,
constrain the earth to come;
send Thy victorious Word abroad,
and bring the strangers home.

We long to see Thy churches full,
that all the chosen race
may, with one voice and heart and soul,
sing Thy redeeming grace.

Finishing preaching through Romans this Sunday. I've fallen in love with the letter afresh, and with the Lord Jesus who speaks through Romans.
