L.A. County Public Defenders Union Local 148: Resisting and Obstructing Injustice since 1914 | RTs ≠ endorsement | #UnionStrong #EndMassIncarceration #CareNotCages
1. Believe us when we say that #LACountyJail is worse than you can imagine. As public defenders, we have seen how dystopian and traumatic the system is for our clients. This kind of incarceration doesn't reform people, it destroys them.

1. Last week, this program graduated 10 new Mental Health Assistants (MHAs)–incarcerated men who assist those with psychiatric needs to step up from the forensic impatient level. It is care in a locked setting but the place is calm and peaceful.

LA’s #publicdefenders came together for a well-deserved night of celebration and connection. We’re grateful for the incredible members of Local 148 and proud to serve this amazing community of 10 million Angelenos!

The @aclusocal.bsky.social is spot on: Angelenos deserve better. DA Hochman claims to be a centrist. But in his first year he brought back the death penalty, opposed the #RacialJusticeAct and is using extreme charging practices.

Masked ICE agents don’t “keep us safe”—they terrorize our communities. Ending anonymous raids is the bare minimum. No one wielding state power should ever be allowed to hide their face from the people they’re targeting.

Public defenders have been doing the heavy lifting on the #RacialJusticeAct for years—filing motions, uncovering bias, and fighting case by case. Anyone calling it “underused” hasn’t been paying attention.

California gave its prison system $17.5B—and it still blew past its budget, overspending $850M in just three years. While our communities are told to “do more with less,” prisons burn through public dollars with zero accountability.

L.A. showed us that trained crisis teams work— they save lives and de-escalate harm. So why are we still waiting to expand them citywide? Every delay costs lives.

#Prop36 supporters call it “safety.” What they mean is: lock up the poor, the sick, and the desperate. Our neighbors, and our clients, need care to get better, not cages. #Prop36

🚨 Federal Public Defender Cuauhtémoc Ortega just called out Trump prosecutor Bill Essayli for holding office without Senate confirmation—and filed a motion to remove him.

1. Every day we are on the frontlines defending justice in the courtroom. We refuse to be passive when democracy is under attack. #Prop50

If masked ICE agents can freely board Metro buses, that’s not public transit—it’s a trap. LA Metro needs to stand up for Angelenos and slam the door on collaboration with #ICE!

‼️California just sued LA County for operating death traps disguised as jails. Rats, rotten food, contaminated water — and 36 people dead this year alone. Nearly 40% of deaths were preventable. This is the prison industrial complex murdering people.

California pushed CARE Court as the answer to addressing mental illness. But running mental health care through judges and petitions was doomed from the start. The data shows dismissals, dead ends, and no real support. Courtrooms can’t replace care.

#LaborDay is a celebration of worker power. Public defenders demand it: fair pay, manageable workload & respect for our constitutional duty. Our community deserves fully funded and well resourced public defense. We will continue to fight for it in court, at the County government & in the streets.

OVERWORKED. UNDERPAID. BURNED OUT.

That’s the brutal reality for LA public defenders. We fight hard for our clients and for justice, but overwhelming caseloads are driving attorneys out in droves. The clock is ticking and management needs to do right as we negotiate our contract.

CA just blew the lid off: 1.5 million pages of police misconduct and use-of-force records from 700 agencies and 12,000 cases. It exposes a system soaked in violence where police brutalize the people they’re sworn to protect. The receipts? Right here:

NYC almost had its first public defender strike in decades because @legalaidnyc.bsky.social attorneys are drowning in caseloads and underpaid. They won key protections—but still no fair wages. That fight isn’t over. We stand in solidarity with our fellow union members!

The LAPD weaponized anti-homeless laws to crush an ICE protest—ripping down tents, seizing food and water, and punishing dissent. The cops brutalizing unhoused people are the same ones targeting immigrants. One system of state violence—working as designed.

People are rotting in LA County jails because they can’t get a lawyer. Cases are being thrown out because public defenders are drowning in impossible caseloads. This isn’t an accident—it’s a system designed to starve public defense.
