Books, movies, music, cycling.
I have an annual tradition of completely avoiding the big 🏈 game and instead putting on an arthouse movie. First year I did it, it was "Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles." Tonight's viewing: Louis Malle's "Vanya on 42nd Street."

Just watched the entertaining but subpar "Judgment Night," from 1993. I love fictional addresses in books and movies, and Emilio Estevez's character has a nonexistent "60204" address from my hometown. I really wish Evanston had a Deadwood Place.

Just visited Miami and brought along Elmore Leonard's "Rum Punch," which I thought would be good South Florida reading. It has one of the best first pages I've read.

Today I learned there's a Florida Key with this name. (Photograph from a map laminated on a table at the wonderfully raucous Flanigan's in Coconut Grove).

Ernst Kirchner ~ The Selling of a Shadow

One of the artists first public showings, he was featured in 1913 at the infamous Armory Show in New York. His art was banned and deemed "degenerate" by the Nazis.

My dad recently gave me his childhood copy of the first issue of Sports Illustrated, published on August 16, 1954. The cover shows the Milwaukee Braves' Eddie Mathews at bat against the New York Giants. Before I get it framed, I want to go through it and post some of its contents.🧵
