“We’ve known that smoke exposure causes poor outcomes, but we haven’t understood how,” said Dr. Kari Nadeau for ABC News. “Our study fills in this knowledge gap, so that [we're] better equipped to respond to the growing threat of ... toxic wildfires.”

ABC News spoke with Dr. Kari Nadeau and Dr. Susan Cheng about their research into the health impacts of toxic exposure of wildfire smoke in firefighters. The first of its kind study found that exposure to smoke may alter the immune system on a cellular level.

Smoke and ash from forest fires contains very different compounds than smoke and ash from wildfires that spread into cities. These fires at the intersection of wild + urban areas burn different types of fuel (homes, cars, etc.), raising new concerns about health impacts of smoke. Read more:

What are VOCs? Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases that are released into the air from solids. This can happen after structures burn during wildfires, but VOCs are also commonly emitted in homes from an array of sources like cleaning products. Learn more:

The LA Fire HEALTH Study released its second Data Brief last week. This brief highlights the presence of VOCs and particles (PM) inside damaged homes in the burn area, and advises continued caution for residents entering affected homes.

What is LA Fire HEALTH? The Los Angeles Fire Human Exposure and Long-Term Health (HEALTH) Study is a 10-year study of the LA fires to determine which pollutants are present, at what levels, where, and how they change over time. And to evaluate their health impacts.
