Unashamedly loves Canberra. US politics tragic from afar. Anxious with a side of hopeful... or is that hopeful with a side of anxious? Primary healthcare champion - GPs are the cornerstone of the healthcare system and need to be valued.
Bravo. Such powerful and brave words from a great artist and human.

Perfect day in Canberra to be exercising our democratic freedom. Love compulsory voting, love the comradery, happy with the outcome. Strong rejection of Trumpian conservatism. Go team Oz!

I feel sad that this guy was one of the last politicians to shake hands with the Pope. May one of them rest in peace, and the other.... well. Let's just say they probably won't meet again.

Psst. You guys are looking a little cray-cray. You might want to tone it down....

I accept there's ugly (not in a physical sense) people everywhere. It's just rare to have a political party so filled with them, and then to have that party be so overtly cruel to fellow humans.

It's the glee they (and their supporters) take in it that makes me feel the most sad.

Which is 978 more than I had in the other place 😅

My view this morning: Canberra from a hot air balloon. So lucky to live here!

Sign of getting old #157...

I've taken "battling politicians at the local shops" to an almost sporting level.

Today, I heard on "the rest is politics" podcast that Trump's approval rating is 47%. How can it be so high? From where I watch (Australia), it seems to be a dumpster fire. What am I missing? Lack of alternative leadership? Systemic racism? Isolationism?

One positive about the state of the world is that it's improved my piano playing and rowing skills. I am terrible at both, but because you can't think about much else when doing them (and can't use your phone) they are my new happy place. Small wins.

The current US administration is giving off mad domestic abuser vibes. Pummells the crap out of everyone, and then flips the script, resulting in "he's not so bad, and sometimes he can be kind of charming. He's just under a lot of pressure. No one understands him like I do." Don't succumb.

This reality show premise of finding the dumbest MFer in the country and making him president isn’t going well. Season 1 sucked. Season 2 is much worse.

Trudeau: I want to speak first directly to the American people… your government has chosen to do this to you. Your government has chosen to put American jobs at risk. They have chosen to raise costs for American consumers on everyday essential items…

Long live the democracy sausage!

My internal WTF-o-meter is red-lining on a daily basis.
GLENN: Why don't you wear a suit? You're at the highest level in this country's office & you refuse to wear a suit. A lot of Americans have problems with you not respecting the office.

ZELENSKYY: I will wear a costume after this war will finish. Maybe something like yours. Maybe something better.

US voting with Russia and North Korea (against the UN) is a move that would have shocked me two years ago, but now makes me think, "What next?"
US rejects UN resolution condemning Russia’s war: How your country voted
The US aligned with Russia in opposing a resolution that called for the immediate withdrawal of troops.

A challenge in the US is that it's going to take great courage for people to say, "we were wrong, we got duped." You need to create a path for these voters to tell their stories without fear or shame. Celebrate all voices that walk away from this madness, no matter how they voted last time.

What lessons should the world be learning from the disaster that is the US right now? I'll start:

1. Don't elect felons.
1a. Especially not twice.

I just don't understand why people didn't (and don't) listen to the words that come out of these people's mouths. They tell you who they are. Yet here we are: first DT now RKJ, with a nazi salute thrown in the mix, to boot. Seems insane to me that this is happening.

Things look weird from over here. I always had that horrible feeling it would be bad... but somehow, it seems worse. Accurate, or just hyperbole/hysteria? Is the US really going to the pack in real time?

Beliefs:
- pay appropriate tax for the good of self and community
- have sufficient regulations in place to obstruct those with misintent
- change comes slowly and rapid disruption is rarely the right way to do it
- treat people how you would like to be treated yourself
- invest in education.

It's a little stunning to me that people are surprised by how things are going in the States. From Australia, it is like watching a bad horror movie: "Don't go in there, US! There's madmen!" Oh, too late, you're dead.

I cannot fathom how anyone can listen to a single press conference by that man and still think he's doing a good job. Repulsive response to a tragic incident.

A mesmerising distraction from the crazy of the world... my little cat Margot. She's a nightmare, but I luff her.

Wow. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde fearlessly calls out Trump and Vance to their faces. This is heroic.
