A health insurance CEO, a fossil fuel executive, a corporation will always hurt us more than a trans person or an unhoused person and a leader that understands and articulates that has an enormous power to channel righteous anger toward systemic change.

But there is another option. Left-wing economic populism can defeat fascism, it directs that anger where it belongs; toward the obscenely wealthy and powerful and the structural injustice they produce.

Significant economic hardships, inequality and instability can give rise to fascism. Demagogues can use the justified anger that people feel about their material conditions and direct it toward marginalized communities.

Gov. Maura Healey on Wednesday proposed significant changes to the state’s 40-year-old right-to-shelter law, including imposing a residency requirement for families and ramping up criminal background checks:
