I work with anyone interested in keeping a wonderful Travel Journal that captures your epic memories when you’re ’on the road’.

The St. Joe River is in Idaho…I gather from friends in Spokane who sent me this old 1950s topo map that it’s a wonderful Fly Fishing river.
So I painted variations of 2 fly patterns - Grizzly King and Doc Spratley…both from my go-to fly patterns. 🙂

Off to its new home

A fun/challenging commission - watercolour on an old topographic map of the BC/Alberta border area.
The client’s favourite hiking area with a bit landscape and a Mountain Aven flower on the side.

Where is your favourite bit of wilderness, cabin, hiking trail, canoe route…?

Imagine this…
You’re about to walk out the door to visit friends and find yourself saying…’I wish I had a card to take along.’
Here’s your chance for me to save your bacon! ❤ 🙂
These are all hand-painted Art Cards to meet every occasion - and …I haven’t written lousy poems on the inside! 🙂

A tiny watercolor vignette of a Hibiscus. ❤

Often I find myself trying to distil something down to as few lines as possible…find the essence so to speak. A fun exercise.
🙂 ❤

I think this is one of the simplest little watercolours I’ve done.
Trying to capture the almost crepe-like texture of the poppy petals that I remember as a child in our front garden. ❤

On its way to its new home. 🙂
This was an interesting commission - for folks who like hiking and the northern wilderness.

Watercolour painted onto a BC topographic map.
This piece measures about 6”x16” 🙂 ❤

Watercolor painted on a sheet taken of an issue of the Illustrated Magazine of Art, 1853/54.
I took a sheet from the magazine and simply painted the chrysalis overtop of the original lithograph images of moths and butterflies.
Sort of a New Meets Old with ephemera art. 🙂

Some of the Fly Fishing watercolour work I’ve been doing - all painted onto old B.C. topographic maps - an illustration of your favourite fishing spots…complete with your favourite fishing fly patterns.

(DM me to get your favourite lake/fly pattern painted for Christmas)

Puffer fish painted onto an old West Coast navigation chart.
…now, I’m not sure we actaully get puffer fish off B.C.’s west coast…but then, this is art and imagination!

Little watercolour vignettes painted on some watercolour paper that I ran through the press to get a kind of embossed look and feel.

My protest - against the big Card companies - and no lousy poem inside - you write your own lousy poem! ❤
Watercolour Art Cards.

I use offcuts of watercolour paper instead of tossing it away.

We all need cards from time-to-time, so buy local Art Cards…it’s good for everyone when you do! ❤

Working to come up with a new way to market the original watercolour Bookmarks I’ve been painting for the Vernon Art Show coming up Nov. 19 - Dec. 24th.
If you know some of my more recent work with old topographic maps…you’ll get the connection. 🙂 ❤

CHRISTMAS IS COMING - there may be someone who’d love a unique watercolour piece on an old B.C. Topo Map - family campsite, favourite fishlake, memorable hiking trail…

I have time to paint a few of these in time for Christmas - DM if this is on your ‘Christmas List’! ❤

I’ve been painting on B.C topo maps a lot, I’ve also been dabbling more into west coast navigation charts. 🙂
One trick is that you have to use older Nav charts - the recent ones are a new kind of plasticized paper it seems.
The old scruffy ones have more character too. 🙂 ❤
These are about 5”x7”

Elementary School, my kids had great trips to Silver Lake behind Peachland…great intro to wilderness/fishing.
Staggering how few kids ‘get out there’ for something like this
Do something rich/fun/memorable with your kids: camping/fishing - they will love you even more!
Watercolour on BC topo map🙂 ❤

Working on some smaller watercolour pieces (5”x7” - ish) using pieces of old B.C. topographic maps.

This is the Kamloops area just a bit north and west of my home, and it’s a beautiful ‘Open Parkland’ dry vegetation landscape - lots of Ponderosa Pine, Interior Douglas Fir and Bunchgrass.
🙂 ❤

A new pair of the flower series I’ll be launching at ArtWalk Sept. 6-7. 🙂
There’s a unique drama in these Echinacea-style flowers that bloom across the sheet of paper, and I love how they come to life as I add the India Ink.

🙂 ❤

When I was a kid walking to school, I was always struck by the brightness of California poppies. They stood out so starkly against the scrubby and dusty growth on the side of the road.
I still love them today.
Another pair of watercolour pieces in the series I’m doing for an upcoming show. 🙂 ❤
