Some photos from my field area in the Whanganui basin in New Zealand(Aotearoa).

I’m Anurag and I’m a sedimentologist,

If you want to learn about what sand tells us about the evolution of landscapes and continents over millions of years drop a follow!🧪

In August 2023, I rented a car and drove around the area. It’s a big tourist destination for residents of nearby Gulf countries and you can often find families having picnics in green meadows.

Also got to see a baobab tree and watch out for camels on the road!🐪🐪

A very unique ecoregion known as the “coastal fog desert” can be found in the Dhofar region of Oman🇴🇲 only during the monsoon season

Thick fogs provide moisture enough to turn the desert bright green with plants and invigorate natural springs creating tons of biodiversity 🧪

Definitely an expert on this area, hope I didn’t mess up my explanation 💀🤞

Salt pond A12 of Alviso Marina County Park in San Jose, CA

Microbes adapted to live in salty water give the pond a red hue that looks beautiful in the sunset. Pictures are not edited at all!

Also an important migratory bird stop. Protect our marshes!🧪

Here are some cool articles about how the shale revolution is powered by beans mostly grown in Northwest India:

What if I told you the modern oil industry is dependent on beans?

My mom cooked some guar beans the other day with potatoes and spices

90% of guar beans grown in India are processed into guar gum which is a crucial thickening agent in fracking fluid used for drilling

There are pretty poor emissions standards for vehicles and industry. Or it’s not being enforced. Where I’m at in Rajasthan I’m still seeing vehicles from the 1980s-90s belching smoke.

Crop stubble burning in the winter to prepare fields for next season needs to be addressed systematically too

Every winter North India faces a major environmental catastrophe in the form of extreme air pollution. I woke up wheezing in my Delhi hotel to a 378 AQI

Why?

Burning of fields after harvest, vehicle emissions, and calm winds trapping pollution preventing dispersal

As we slowly divest from oil/gas, let’s take a look at where it all started.

Baku Azerbaijan, the world’s first oil well 1846. The Absheron area is so full of O/G that gas seeps result in burning hillsides, and 350/700 of the world’s mud volcanoes. Oil wells everywhere too🧪

This is me in basin analysis, most of my field is dependent on hydrocarbon research money. Of course I disagree with the actions of the big corps and support climate efforts but there would be little interest in sed basins and the secrets they hold about geologic deep time if not for the o/g money

On the black sand beaches of the North Island you might see some patches shimmering a metallic blue

These are iron sands containing volcanic heavy minerals like titanomagnetite and ulvite that look blue!

Picture pairs with the saturation upped on one to show the mineralogy

I’m a geologist who likes to blend my field with anthropology and history, I plan to start posting things about the effects of local and regional geology on the history and culture of an area/people. Drop a follow if you’d like to see that!

Been a fan since the Paharikawa days, keep it up!

My first field experience as a geology graduate student last weekend looking at ~300+ million year old Carboniferous river delta and continental shelf deposits of the Heartshorne formation in Central Arkansas!

This state is absolutely beautiful and I can’t wait to explore more of it #geosciences 🧪

Hi, I’m a M.S. Geology student doing sed basin research in New Zealand. I’d like to be able to join and contribute to the community!

I don’t have a full researchgate or google scholar but if needed I can send two posters of my undergrad or my post-bacc research.
