Hispanic Heritage Week began in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded to Sept 15 to Oct 15 by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. This month coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of several Latin American nations, reminding us not to take our own independence for granted.
