Lives in Victoria, B.C. Thinks, teaches and writes about architectural creativity and sustainability: its histories, technologies and theories. Also cuts smol colorful crystals into sparkly objects to wear.

‘They say, We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning.’ —Archibald MacLeish

Remembering the fallen this Memorial Day, we can consider our own duty to strive so that our lives and our country are worthy of the price they paid.

NEW: Crowd now growing at the Capitol where Cory Booker and Hakeem Jeffries are staging a sit-in on the steps.

Is this building into something?

If you’re in DC, they’re encouraging folk to come down there & support.

I just showed this to "someone" and they said, "oh, its you!"
Me to myself: This is annoying. This conversation is annoying, this person is annoying. I hope I’m hiding it well.

Something to give us hope: Northwestern U has pioneered a way to break down PET plastics into monomers. Safer, cheaper and cleaner, and can lead us to a circular economy for plastic that could incentivize the removal of plastics from our environment news.northwestern.edu/stories/2025...

In case my American friends need this reminder: beavers can be deadly.
Beaver kills man trying to pose for photo
It was the most serious in a string of beaver attacks on humans in Belarus, as the rodents have turned increasingly aggressive when confronted by humans after wandering near homes, shops and schools.

These two buildings express the values of their place. The remarkable restoration of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and the creation of The Bullitt Center in Seattle. Two very different but honest cultural expressions, both utterly inspirational.

Unlike the ephemeral world of digital creation, physical architecture cannot sustain illusions. Buildings don't lie - they can't afford to. The implications of this contrast are staggering. In a world of increasingly frictionless digital creation, architecture stands stubbornly, proudly physical.

It took me years of learning and teaching architecture to grasp its most powerful secret: buildings can't lie. The victors might write the histories, but architecture owes its existence to an inescapable truth-teller: cost. When real money is at stake, pretense falls away.

One of the stickiest problems to tackle in any sustainable building is how to design for reuse, adaptation, and retrofit. How do we design for what we aren’t yet conceiving in terms of technology and building systems, much less spatial arrangements.
The Centenary Building in Salford is barely 30 years old and in 1996 was crowned the best building in the UK. It is going to be demolished. Have the options to re-use or retrofit really been exhausted?

It’s just not fair because her show sold out in about 40 mins for Victoria Listening Room, but this has to be reposted. The bridge to her new song that she’ll be singing at every show. This is the reinforcing power of Crys Matthews:

While this beautiful sunset tourmaline has already found its home, I am so in love with this cut, I think I will try it again. Blue zircon? Green tourmaline? More of this orange/pink tourmaline? What is your favorite color for a gem?
