Just walking
A few more pics from Valle de Luna. Just stunning landscape.

3rd stop, Valle de Luna (moon) is just a few km from San Pedro. The trail to see the great dune is very popular (see the crowd gathered at the viewpoint in the third pic). It’s really hard to describe the feeling of being in a place like this.

2nd stop, Laguna Chaxa, part of the Los Flamencos Reserve. It’s really well put together with nice information, an interpretive trail and proper viewing areas. The place is just magical despite me being baked in the super hot 1pm sun. It’s fun watching the flamingoes feed.

Visited a couple of lagoons in Saler de Atacama, a huge salt flat with the Andes to the east. First stop, Laguna Tebinquiche, more salt than water on the section that I can access.

First stop before the the town San Pedro is Valle de Arcoiris (rainbow). Really beautiful deep red-colored rocky hills. The sun is searing hot, felt like I needed sunscreen underneath my clothes.

Arrived at Calama, a city in the Atacama desert. Once we drove out from the airport, its constant mind blowing scenery. The elevation quickly went from 7489ft at the airport to 10544ft.

Mistimed the ride to the airport and didn’t get a last 🍦from the absolutely terrific JauJa. 😢

Flavors tried:
Pomelo,
Dulce de Leche with mulberry and
Sauco de la Pasión (I understood as some kind of local berry with passion fruit).
So many more that I wish to try.

Despite giant legally required signs that certain products have excess sugar, saturated fats and calories, there’s no stopping folks visiting Bariloche from loading up on chocolates. Someone said to me the more signs there are, the more delicious the thing is. 😄

Today’s activities included a kayaking excursion at Mascardi Lake, with a terrific lunch at a beach. Started with a calm lake in the morning and ended paddling against the wind on the way back. Took a short walk thru a nearby forest along a beautiful blue creek. Last day in Patagonia 😢

Relaxing day sailing the Blest arm of Nahuel Huapi Lake. At the destination, Puerto Blest, a short trail with a nice board walk thru the Valvidian rainforest takes one to a 1500 year-old Larch tree.
Had a delicious sweetbread as starter for dinner.

Thought I’ve had enough parrillas (Argentinian grills) for a while but I saw chinchulines on the menu of Alto El Fuego so I had to go. It was delicious, so was the half-portion short ribs. Salads or vegetables in general doesn’t seem to be popular in restaurants. Glad to get a good one today.

More views of the lake from various spots. It’s really sunny here compared to the southern parts of Patagonia where I was previously.

Attempted to make empanadas for lunch. Mine looked like it’s been ran over by a truck.

Took a guided tour today to go around Bariloche. First, Cerro Companario via a chairlift (my legs are tired😅) with awesome views of Nahuel Huapi Lake. Next, visited a little chapel with a good view of the famous Llao Llao (sweet sweet) hotel. Lastly, an easy walk thru a forest with arrayán trees.

Taking a short walk by along Río de las Vueltas just outside my hotel in El Chaltén. Had simple lunch (lentils stew) to give the digestive system a break after consecutive big meat days. The drive back to El Calafate was gorgeous.

Bariloche is the next destination.

Got some better views on the way back to town. A sign at a mirador gave some ideas on what one can actually see on a good day. I kind of like the clouds too.
Was super hungry after the hike. The natural thing to do is to have another round of Patagonian lamb and skirt steak. 😄

Strongest wind I’ve encountered in this trip.

The weather god wasn’t in a good mood on this hike to Laguna Torre. Was walking in the rain most of the morning, not much to see. The trail ends at a brown glacial lake, no views of the mountains behind it. Kind of beautiful too.

What does one do after a strenuous 14-mile hike in Patagonia?

A 🥩 dinner at a parilla, La Oveja Negra, perfectly cooked and seasoned medium rare ribeye and skirt steak. This restaurant is terrific, wonderful service and first decent salad for this trip! Great exchange rate too.

Cerro Chálten (Tehuelche for "smoking mountain"). Today’s clear blue sky is rare, no winds either. I felt that there’re more people at this mirador than at Base Torres. Spent an hour there to soak in the beauty. The descent was brutal for my knees. Kept stopping to look back at the the mountains.
January 19, 2026 at 11:47 AM
After 6.4 miles, the trail join the main Chálten trail. The last section is a constant climb up rocky terrain, it wasn’t too difficult but felt longer than 2km and you have to stop often to let the descending folks to pass. (Zoom in to see the line of people in the 4th pic)
January 19, 2026 at 11:36 AM
Started the hike to the famous Cerro Chálten base from the Piedras Blancas Glacier trail. It’s a really popular trail, there’s a line to get past the park entrance! The trail has gentle inclines going thru a forest with many scenic viewpoints. ❤️

❤️ El Chaltén laid back and alpine vibes, hikers are everywhere! Had lunch at La Tapera, tried the guanaco carpaccio 😋.
Took a short hike to Mirador de Los Cóndores with amazing views of Cerro Chaltén and Lago Viedma.
I could just stare at the mountains all day while eating alfajores with tea.
January 18, 2026 at 2:56 AM
The drive from El Calafate to El Chaltén was incredible, passing Lago Argentino, arriving at Lago Viedma with the Cerro Chaltén (aka Mount Fitz Roy) dominating the view for the last 30 minutes.

Took a one hour 4x4 drive and a short hike to reach the overlook of Upsala Glacier. Super beautiful place, wished I could hang out there longer but the winds were 🥶🥶🥶
