Thrilled to share that my second child was born in January happy and healthy. Maternity leave is flying by and I’m so grateful for this chance to embrace my children at this tiny stage of their lives.

Striking paper from researchers at Anthropic using a randomised control trial to look at the effects of AI use on skills acquisition.

TL:DR ‘We found that using AI assistance led to a statistically significant decrease in mastery.’

Second PhD paper is out! We find: 1) aquatic and terrestrial salamanders have different limb bone adaptations, 2) complex life cycles promote different traits, 3) decoupling of external and internal bone traits increase diversity.

Thread (1/8) and FREE link below! 🦎🧪

Habitat and complex life cycles promote morphological diversity in salamander limb bones
We examined the external shape and cross-sectional morphology of limb bones in 133 salamander species spanning the ecological and phylogenetic breadth of Caudata. We find that adaptations for aquatic...

return from mat leave, day 10(?): said "birdies" in my first lecture back.

i suppose being transparent about return to work & lack of sleep extends to transparency around my students, but gosh i would like to feel a bit more competent.

How to lead a journal club you won’t be embarrassed by later
One of the jobs facing an early-career scientist, and a developing writer, is to learn what their field’s literature looks like. One of the best tools to that end is the journal club. If you’ve nev…

Day 5 back from maternity leave, some positives: ate fruit without having to share. coffees and lunch with good friends. running over lunch without the running pram (it acts as a sail). sitting quietly in the sunshine. supportive colleagues.

Day 4 back from maternity leave: I want to scream. Is it cognitive overload as meeting requests start to pour in? Is it a hormonal crash, am I weaning too abruptly? Is it lack of sleep w teething baby? Is it a dramatic crash in base activity levels as I sit at a desk again?

I don’t scream. I run.

Out of curiosity, I tried to use ChatGPT to make R code a few times.

Once it worked great, solving the problem with more elegant code than I’d have used.

Twice it worked fine, clunky but it got there.

Twice it generated cuckoo-bananapants nonsense- but I’d only know that if I knew how to code.
But now, when I hear "well, I use chatgpt because I can code in R / analyse my data / do literature review again", my answer is systematically: no, you cannot.

I think the loss of technical skills is dangerous for research, because it prevents a sound understanding of feasibility.

🧪 PRACTICAL tip for NSF PIs with terminated grants:

You're entitled to recover more closeout costs than a DOGE-fueled NSF may lead you to believe.

➡️ Do this NOW: Send fed reg 2 CFR 200.472 on allowable "termination costs" to your sponsored research office:
