Text reads as follows: Eirene is wrapped around a pillar like a vine, so entrenched in its crevices that she could be part of the Idalion mural that opens itself across the wall. When she was a little child, the maids would sometimes compare her to a Nereid: slight, with lush, dark skin and pools of onyx hair, she often looked as though she had leapt out from the very sea that enveloped Andros like a secret. Now, as she catches strains of conversation between blistering raindrops, she feels more like a nymph than ever — she is naught but a trickling brook in the rockface of the palace wall, almost silent save for the gentle sound of her breathing. She does not mean to eavesdrop, and yet she doesn't stop herself. She has long been curious of her husband's relationship with the cold-hearted King of Oukra, though she has never mentioned it during their nightly conversations. In fact, she had been on her way to see Kyparissos this very night, eager to discuss her latest literary thoughts and conjecture, when she was caught in the shadows of his exchange with the King. Text reads as follows: "He is discontent," Eirene offers, smoothing her palms over her clothes in a small act of self-reassurance. "Is he always so?" Kyparissos' face turns pained, cut open. "More and more, these days," he says tiredly. "We are," he eyes Eirene carefully, "close. We spent time together in our youth." It is an explanation that is unasked for, and yet one that Kyparissos must be very practiced in giving. "I know," Eirene answers his silent question — there is nothing strange here, there is nothing odd. "Will he be staying with — us?" She trips over the question, intending to prescribe this visit to Kyparissos alone, but the reminder of their union hiccups out of her unbidden. It is something that clearly strikes Kyparissos, for he nods jerkily at the sound, slightly off-balance. "I do not know how long," Kyparissos sighs. "I do not know much of anything, these days." Text reads as follows: "You should not eavesdrop, Eirenaki," Kyparissos chides, and Eirene feels something spark within her. Irritation? Rage? No, not quite — a little frustration. She is not a child, and as a woman, she is not less than her husband. To speak to her like she's done some petty wrong, when he has caused such problems... it's inconceivable, and therefore impossible to bear. "No? I should not? What else should I do, Kyparissos?" The words flow forth from her like a dam has burst; once she starts, she cannot stop, her tongue loosened by emotion. "You bring me to this palace, you wed me, and you expect me to birth an heir. All these things, I have accepted. All these things, I have tolerated. In all areas of my life, I am governed: first by my father, then by the gods, now by you." She takes a step forward, watching with some satisfaction as Kyparissos stumbles back. "I try not to resent you, in all your freedoms. Free to wander, free to explore, free to fight, free to love — but it is very, very difficult. And I do not begrudge you your lover—" she gestures vaguely to Aigyptios, who seems poised to flee, "so, please, do not begrudge me my curiosity." Text reads as follows: "And if things are... difficult," Kyparissos continues, now less certain of himself, but not any less determined. "I hope you will confide in me?" She can't guarantee it. There are some things Kyparissos could never understand, and some things she can't even speak aloud. Even now, the caves of the Underworld haunt her, a painting upon the walls of her memory. Sometimes, when she closes her eyes, she sees a glowing hand reaching out to her, determined to snatch her up from where she dwells and spirit her away. But all this is too much to explain, and it is not the place right now. There will be time to begin to piece it apart, perhaps in the future, when they're older and wiser. "Yes," she says simply.
