Professor of Economics at IIES, Stockholm
In 2021 and 2023 I had the chance to serve on the @ERC_Research Starting Grant evaluation panel. There are a couple of things I learned that might be helpful to future applicants. I guess some points apply to other grants as well.

The @reveconstudies.bsky.social (REStud) invites every year some of the world's most promising young researchers in economics to present their work around Europe.

We were proud to host the REStud Tour 2025 at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences earlier this week.

US academia is unparalleled in the welfare it creates.

But US academia is now under attack and other countries, like Germany, have to keep the flame alive for a while. It will make them more innovative.

Giving US researchers a new home
Amid growing pressure from the US government, Hertie School President Cornelia Woll co-authors op-ed arguing that German institutions have the opportunity to support world-class researchers.

Congratulations to IIES alumnus David Yanagizawa-Drott and Julia Cagé on winning the prestigious Yrjö Jahnsson Award 2025! Their work shows how media shapes political beliefs and underscores the need for media independence in democracy. www.eeassoc.org/awards/yrjo-...

I hear that many leading researchers currently based at US institutions are thinking of leaving the country.

It seems to me a fantastic opportunity for Europe to make a big investment in research and attract those people to come here. 🇪🇺

I am so happy that my friend and colleague Arash Nekoei managed to secure the generous ERC support for his fantastically interesting work! 🥳🇪🇺

Agneta Berge, @agnetaberge.bsky.social, is by now probably Sweden's leading expert on the role of labour unions for the economy, with an exciting research agenda covering a broad range of important macroeconomic questions.

Interested in those topics? Make sure to get to know her!
Introducing our #EconJMC @agnetaberge.bsky.social. In her #EconJMP “Two-tier collective wage bargaining in a frictional labor market” she develops a general equilibrium model of two-tier bargaining, where central negotiations are supplemented with local adjustments bit.ly/4eUBDgR #econsky 1/6

Should we subsidise the care for elderly people?

Patrizia blends elegant theoretical with excellent empirical work to show that an increase of the subsidy in fact paid for itself.

She is an enormously promising researcher.

Check out her work!
Introducing our #EconJMC Patrizia Massner. In her #EconJMP “Should Elder Care Be Subsidized? Theory and Evidence from Sweden” Patrizia examines the impact of a 2002 elder care fee reform that lowered costs by 40% on average for 2/3 of Sweden’s municipalities. www.su.se/institute-fo... 1/6 #econsky

So the invisible hand doesn't always guide us to socially desirable levels of robustness.

Just as no single driver can prevent a traffic jam, individual firms can't/don't do enough ensure the stability of the supply network.

This raises some big policy questions (for a future thread)

I just attended the annual meeting of the editorial board of
the Review of Economic Studies. One message from the editors:
REStud is interested in publishing the best work, no matter how short the articles are! If you have very good short papers, you might want to try REStud first.

I asked the students to work in groups for some minutes, and when standing in the class room to listen in, there was a guy sitting right in front of me playing a game on his phone. The fact that I was standing next to him did not bother him at all.

What do you think is an appropriate reaction?

True story. Needless to say I am very excited and honoured the ERC decided to support my research agenda. Thank you so much to everybody who helped me along the way!

Incredibly bad news for Economics in Germany. It was such a coup to attract a young superstar (from MIT!) to run one of our leading research institutes. I can’t believe we are losing him and all the potential he brought to IZA.

I understand the Deutsche Post Foundation has to scale down its financial support. That said, it is very hard to see much value in how they managing that process.
I cannot believe what I'm reading here...

The current CEO of IZA, Simon Jäger, has decided to depart from his leadership role at IZA by the end of 2023 [...]
Effective January 1, 2024, Armin Falk, the current CEO of briq Institute, will take over the leadership of IZA

I find it almost always unhelpful to report effect sizes in terms of "a one standard deviation change" of the explanatory variable.
