The evolution of a character artist is for them to develop their characters and build an ensemble cast to tell stories with. Focus on characters you cherish and want to see will reflect upon your audience, cherishing them in turn.

I get the impression that you feel that you're just spinning in place. A street performer grinding out pictures for coin. It's easy to feel trapped in this cycle and fall into despair.
What you may be missing is the emotional connection. Focusing on a character who inspires both you and others.
