On this day—Nov 10—in 1483, Martin Luther was born. In honor of his birthday, here’s a picture of a stone from a house in Wittenberg. In 1717 the old inscription on the stone was restored and displayed. It says:

“God’s Word and Luther’s writings are poison to the Pope and Calvin.”

I feel seen . . . .

But, seriously, true ecumenical dialogue is never achieved by setting aside our most deeply held convictions or the particularity of our traditions in favor of superficial agreements.

Sarah has a shirt with a picture of a Eucharistic Host above a Chalice. Looking at it, Thomas said:

“That’s the bread with the cross on it that Dada gave me at church. We break it and eat it. Then we put the pieces together, and it turns into the perfect meal for us.”

Hanukkah began at sundown on this Christmas Day, which means that Hanukkah (the eight day Festival of Lights) and Christmastide (the Twelve Days of Christmas) overlap this year.

December 6 is the Feast of Saint Nicholas

“The giver of every good and perfect gift has called upon us to mimic His giving, by grace through faith, and this is not of ourselves.”
- Nicholas (“Santa Claus,” c. 270—343), Bishop of Myra

While disabusing children of the “Santa Myth,” adults are dressing up as & celebrating Krampus. But St Nicholas was a real bishop in 4th c. Turkey, who’s even now alive in Christ’s Risen Body, the everlasting communion of saints. Krampus is just a story made up to scare kids into not being brats.

When St Nicholas heard a corrupt politician condemned 3 soldiers for a crime they didn’t commit, he raced to stop it. The Bishop of Myra was held in such high regard for his goodness & holiness that the executioner dropped his sword to the ground & the politician released the innocent soldiers.
