Infectious Diseases physician and Clinical Microbiologist. I love me some bugs, drugs, and hugs.
Musings from a tired microbiologist: if you place an order for both sputum AND urine culture, please send them in separate containers. I appreciate minimizing healthcare waste as much as possible... but not in this case. Please send two containers. Just… trust me on this one.

Musings from a tired microbiologist: When sending a sample from a chronic pleural effusion, please draw it from a new, clean pleurx catheter. Do not send us the whole pleurx bottle along with all the tubing in a biohaz bag because that's just contaminated fluid to me. And junk. A lot of junk.

Wake up #IDSky!!! #Meal-ioidosis totals just jumped by ~$9k!!! Thank you to whoever you are!!! #HCWvsHunger
We’ve had some movement on the #HCWvsHunger leaderboard with #meal-ioidosis making moves like vancomycin on MRSA.

Musings from a bemused microbiologist: While I'm always happy to have more tissue for culturing (bigger is better), I don't want the whole toe or finger or armpit. The skin will contaminate the sterile cup, making it harder to know what's real vs colonization.
Judicious tissues please. Thanks!

Musing from a tired microbiologist: If you want to send a tick or parasite to the lab, you just need to send it in the sterile cup. Please don't stick the tick to a label, then put the label in the cup. We can't remove the tick from the label without ripping it apart, which is not great. Thanks!

Musing from a tired microbiologist: if you have a sterile OR site, please do not wipe it with gauze - and then send the dirty gauze to the lab for either culturing or histopath. That is technically garbage, NOT a specimen. Thank you.

Trying to get my feet under me with the butterflies. I’ll be scouring for other ID and clinical micro docs and groups. I rarely post but I like keeping up with more prolific social butterflies.
