It was so fun to help out on this project and think about how the UO field school has influenced all our lives. Seeing past students leading their own fieldwork is something special.
This photo has 5 generations of UO archaeological field school students! Students from 2011, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2023 worked on a survey project in northern Nevada, led by Geoffrey Smith (University of Nevada-Reno) and Aiden Hlebechuk (MNCH field school and archaeological research division alum).

Coastal archaeological/cultural heritage sites around the world —information about our collective human past + historical ecological data of marine + terrestrial ecosystems — threatened by rising sea levels. Projections by 2100 range from ~1 m to 4 m of sea level rise. FOUR. METERS.
In Science (p. 462) this week, my colleagues--Scott Fitzpatrick, Kristina Gill, Patrick Kirch, John Ruiz, Victor Thompson, Jason Younker--and I warn of the dire threat rising seas (0.81 cm in 2024!) and marine erosion pose for coastal archaeological sites worldwide.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion
The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

Wow! This is awesome news. Tom Connolly and Patty Krier are incredible people. Can’t wait to see the research and educational programs their generous gift will support for years to come.
We are thrilled to announce a new endowment, the Thomas J. Connolly Fund for Archaeological and Historical Research and Education. The fund honors Dr. Tom Connolly’s 40+ year career as a UO archaeologist, a scientist, and the director of our archaeological research program.

American Archaeology published a wonderful look into our field schools and how they contribute to Great Basin archaeology and changing the scientific understanding of people in North America. The article includes THREE GENERATIONS of University of Oregon students! 🏺🧪https://shorturl.at/O4Zj5
