Unsundered Azem was female just like Katina. This doesn’t mean all shards and incarnations are, however! The previous Source incarnation of Azem, before Katina was born, was male… and Katina’s great grandfather!

Katina’s hair developed spots that grow in platinum blonde. If she grew it out, it would probably look like highlights, but with as short as it was then, it looked spotty. She dyes it to look even.
At the end when she nearly turned, her back began to split open for wings. She has scars there now.
