To my non-academic followers, a short bit on what this means:

STEM faculty especially often need to get a certain amount in grants to be awarded tenure.

If they don't get tenure, they lose their job.

This usually ends the career of that faculty.

This is the point.

Some 20 years ago I wrote about the Philippines as a colonial laboratory for the US to test racial practices in public health and clinical medicine. Others also analyze the racial formations of US public health, but its concomitant imperial dimensions mostly are still ignored

I hope US historians of public health will point out that the pathologizing of presumed non-white races at the border (and internally) has a long and painful history, well documented. Some practices have a nasty tendency to recur....

My paper on the taxonomy of mediated sociality has been published in Human Studies. Drawing on Schutz’s concepts of thou- and they-orientation, this paper phenomenologically explored how I experience the other in online/offline settings.
It’s an open access paper.

Taxonomy of Mediated Sociality: A Phenomenological Approach - Human Studies
While phenomenologists have paid little attention to mediated sociality, the situation has recently been changing owing to the increasing dependence of social life on digital media. Alfred Schutz’s so...

I watched Sonatine again to prepare for today's lecture on media and society. Kitano's early movies remind me that the gun does not always go off, contrary to what Anton Chekhov told young playwrights.

I was about to quote a line from Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five, saying, “I hope that we’ll meet again in a world of peace and freedom in the bar if the accident will.” A perfect line for expressing your sincere affection for a friend living far away.

I recently attended an international workshop on epistemic injustice, where a white guy from Europe talked about how the dimension of class has been underrepresented over other issues like gender, race, and ethnicity. It was not the first time I had encountered that kind of people.

I don't believe anyone who does not stand against transgender hate, no matter what expertise they have.

I already said something relevant to this topic 8 months ago!

I was talking with my friend living in Korea about the recent failed martial law attempt. I could sense something similar to embarrassment rather than anger in him, something quite different from what the Japanese or American media commentators have said.

Recently, I started a new project of reading post-war Japanese literature. I am not interested in those moralistic criticisms that judge what was right and wrong about those writings because we all make mistakes in the long run, and we’ve got to learn from those mistakes we make.
