The Hazbins find a decrepit pool in the hotel and set about renovating it. It triggers some particularly bad memories for aka. Husk has aquaphobia & PTSD. Husk didn't know that the hotel had an old, disused pool, and he'd really be better off not fucking knowing. Charlie chatters how she never even knew it was here, and the bartender's mind is cast back to black depths, disease-ridden corpses tainting the waters, a vulnerable ford ripe for ambush Niffty tasks herself with cleaning up the decrepit pool, and Husk remembers never go alone and look away for one second and suddenly they're gone. He discretely asks Angel and Vaggie to keep an eye on her, cause Niffty would refuse any direct offer of aid (and that attitude got them killed) Angel seems to see straight through Husk like he's a fractured pane of glass. Vaggie outright asks him, with concern, if there's a reason for his request - if the cat is okay. Husk doesn't want to elaborate. He takes another swig of cheap booze. They're still working on that f*cking pool, and Husk gets a massive sense of foreboding every time Charlie gushes about how things are coming along or Angel makes an allusion to his 'beach bod'. One day there's a commotion somewhere in the hotel - a bassy roar - (tense, ready to take cover or flee - two shrieks - (someone is suffering) - the crackle of shadowy static - (orders coming in the fog) then Alastor manifests in the lobby lugging some mutant fucking shark, still twitching, to his swamp lair and fuck Husk is clinging to debris; fins circling; scales shredding his legs or are those teeth teeth te e th... The Radio Demon finds him afterwards, gasping, pressed into a corner and yanking at his tattered ears. Alastor does nothing but remain at his side in respectful silence. Husk hates it, and hates himself for hating it as well.

I thought not. It's not a story many would know. It's a fable from the depths of Hell. Charlotte Magne was the daughter of Lucifer and Lilith; a demon of such power, determination, and linage, that she was able to bend reality to her will, if she chose. But she had such compassion, such a sense of righteousness, that she directed her talents against the recurrent Exterminations; to lost, condemned souls she sought to grant...redemption. Yes, she aimed to send sinners to Heaven. Did she succeed? Well, she certainly came close. To be the offspring of the first Fallen is to possess many abilities that are unique, unparalleled, or unnatural. She became so powerful; and her plans progressed more than any on either side of the firmament had anticipated. Both Heaven and Hell knew her will would be too strong to contend soon. They saw her future. They feared her. And dear Princess Charlotte was too wrapped up in her fleeting success to see it coming. The next Extermination came, and Heaven refused to accept any souls from the Princess's hotel, no matter how much self-improvement they had accomplished. The Exorcists targeted them, and, unfortunately, culled them all the same. The first irony...Charlotte tried so hard to save her subjects, her friends, but it was in vain. Then Lucifer stepped in. What he said to his daughter, then, was not heard, but long was his resent of Heaven apparent, and long was the morning star apathetic to the plight of the overpopulated sinners he ruled. He'd never been blind, though, to the potential of his daughter nor what the Gospels predicted her to be. The antichrist. We can make an educated guess. Charlotte's own father offered her no comfort, no sympathy. Most likely he used her failure to justify the way things were; pressed his telling of Heaven's prejudices; dismissed the well-being of the average sinner. Most likely he tried to give his daughter no choice but to return to his side and conform. Princess Charlotte - grieving, demoralized, betrayed - must have been incomprehensibly enraged.

When Angel sashays back into the hotel lobby after work - in a swell mood; his clients all had reasonable requests today and Val was pleased (or distracted) enough to let him keep a more substantial share of the pay - Husk refuses to meet his gaze. In fact, the feline pointedly turns his whole body away as the spider enters; busying himself with cleaning cups at the rear of the bar. It stings, the rejection - of course it does. But Angel has known Husk for nearly a year and a half now; they've been going steady since the last Extermination. He's learned intimately all of the old cat's quirks and cues. The way Husk hunches in on himself now - just like how he shrinks from his wartime nightmares - extinguishes any temper Angel could muster. If Husk were really pissed, he'd be letting the whole hotel know with no hesitation. (Maybe some of Cha-cha's counselling has finally rubbed off; a year ago he would have gone all offended and huffy himself. Probably gotten into a nasty quarrel too.) So Angel breathes in and out; traipses over to the bar and slips himself onto a barstool. "Hey, Husk. 'S'matter, babe?" "it's nothin'." "Aw, c'mon Husky. I can tell something's bothering ya." "You're bothering me." There's no real heat in the retort, and Angel notes the cat's back cringe slightly as he says them. He tackles the gut-punch hurt down, reminds himself that Husk's only got his walls up. Husk grabs, chugs a bottle of beer, then turns and glowers seeing the spider still at the counter. "Couldja fuckin' lay off? I don't want to talk 'bout it right now." His eyes dart about as he scrubs his mouth, scanning the room as if expecting eavesdroppers or an ambush. That detail doesn't escape Angel's notice. "Kitty, it's past midnight," he murmurs reassuringly. "Just us down here." Husk grunts, turns away to take another swig, but some of the tension in his back has gone down. That's a good sign. Angel pauses, inhales, before continuing. "Look... I know this is probably something to do with my workin' the streets an' all. Ya do tend to get all...y'know, surly-like, uncomfortable... on nights like these. Been noticin' that for a while now. At least," he quips lamely, trailing off, "when I ain't sauced up on sum't'in..." A gritted sigh. "Fuck it." Husk places the bottle down and turns around. The furrow of his brows and the stoic concern in his voice broadcast no resentment but insecurity. "I know, alright?" he blurts. "That you're in a contract with Val, that you gotta do all this stuff on the streets 'cause he makes ya." His tone softens. "An' it's not you. I don't hold it against ya, Angel. I mean it. Don't want you beating yourself up over it, cause I reckon you - uh - get enough of that already..." Angel feels his chest tighten a bit. "Then what izzit, Husk?" Husk averts his eyes, anxious. He seems to take a while to find the right words, and speaks them in a small, hesitant voice: "Am I not...gonna be... enough, for you, someday?" Angel sits bolt upright instantly. "Dontcha dare drag yerself like that Husky." The spider's voice is a low, protective growl. "You're miles better than any of the Johns out there, in and out of bed." He waves a trio of arms wildly, emotionally, in the direction of the main doors, the city beyond. "We talk. Ya listen. We drink - I have a ball just spendin' time with ya, before we even get to the bedroom - and that means so much more than any number of clients I can suck off in one night. That's just getting laid an' paid; sure I might fucken enjoy it some nights but only for what it is! Can't remember their faces even when I'm sober. I ain't fallen for any of them like...like I have with you." Husk doesn't say anything, his ears folded against his head. There's a long enough silence for Angel to really start to fret, before the cat hesitantly makes his way around the counter and sits on a stool next to Angel, taking off his top…

He scratches at the back of his head & reddening ears; tugs at his bowtie; glances away then back, rocking a little on his paws. Angel's kiss drowns out the racing thoughts with euphoria. "Oh! Cherri, doll -" Cherri almost chokes up, presses her lips together in a wobbly smile at Molly's soft voice and unconditionally proffered kindness. If condemned souls have a heart then Cherri can feel hers pounding out a loud, fast tempo, somewhere under her slackening shoulders. She leans over, plants her face into Molly's soft shoulder and relishes the feeling of the spider's arms cocooning her in a safe hug. "Oh, Molls..." Molly clutches two hands to her chest; her beaming smile brightening of its own violation. She only just hears her happy little exhale, fixated on the sensation when Cherri clasps her other hand. She doesn't need any cue to lean forward and touch foreheads; not caring how it musses up her hair. She knows Cherri is rough-edged, hardened, by life and death. It makes her so glad, every time, to see the cyclops let her walls down - even moreso when it's because of her.

But she doesn't really know what to do. (at least, not yet) The alarm goes off. Vaggie, blinking, rolls over and reaches across to the bedside table. She knocks a glass of water clean onto the floor. Charlie jolts awake at the noise; peers over Vaggie's shoulder at the shattered mess on the carpet. She rubs the moth's rigid back; presses warmth and presence against her girlfriend, delicately offering words of it's okay and Niffty won't have any trouble dealing with it... until Vaggie's internal monologue of stupid, blind, should have been more careful subsides and the clenched panic in her chest thaws, and now she can fumble deliberately for the still-squawking phone, pick it up, and hit snooze. She puts the phone back and huffs, turning to face her girlfriend. Charlie looks at her with such earnest caring that Vaggie can't help but slowly smile, and really believe in that infectious unspoken reassurance. Charlie beams back; kisses her, and encloses her in a morning cuddle, gently tracing a thumb around the scarred 'X' of Vaggie's left eye. The hotel burns. The wards are torn - hẻ tore them It was, in the moment, exhilarating to watch as realization filtered through the denizens and then as panic set in. A true feeling of elated apprehension that he hadn't felt in so long... Then the angels came in. Alastor lies, twisted, watching the circling formations through the peeled roof. In corners of his vision there's a scattered pack of cards, a tattered feather, a ripped red lady's glove. The chaos, the collapse of forlorn hopes and dreams... yes, it was most entertaining. While it lasted. But now...what could top this - allowing exorcists to enter protected premises? Was it worth losing Husker? Seeing the princess turn her back and disappear into herself, no fire, just the mere act of giving up? Was it worth the holy blade piercing his body, draining his essence into the void? He doesn't regret, though. What still consumes Alastor, as he fades, is a hunger for MỚRĘ of the thrill that has brought him down. The end is absolute boredom.
