This hatred of the Civil Rights Movement was baked into the culture. It's fostered all these years until MAGA made those resentments virtuous. Why all this shock? It took fifty years, but this white resentment has been finally validated as federal policy.

I grew up in the '50s and Sixties in a blue collar, lily white sundown New Jersey township. I used to hear all the time how the "blacks" (when in "polite company") had more rights than whites. This was in the late Sixties north of the Mason-Dixon line.
