OPINION: With the US showing signs of political self-destruction, Europe is now poised to confront authoritarianism, if it so chooses.

It could unmask Trump’s far-right allies as embarrassingly inept on the economy, while sparking a renewed belief in democracy even as the darkness deepens.
Trump is on a quest to poison global political culture
Europe is at a turning point, where it can choose to reassert the ideals once pledged by the EU and confront the authoritarian brew emanating from U.S. If not now, when?

“Like all men, I can sort of zone out and fail to appreciate what people are really feeling, and that’s a bad thing. Generally speaking, I would say I was as good as the next man at spotting what people are feeling.”

Only if "the next man" happens to also be a self-involved arsehole.

I’ve just realised I’ve been confusing Edward Carey with Edward Gorey all my life.

I just thought it was one man who was both dead and alive, both British and American, who loved the grotesque. This was so confusing to me.
