If you’re a filmmaker in L.A. know that the Academy Museum is hosting several events in their beautiful theatre this week.

Yesterday, I saw all 5 live action, Oscar nominated shorts. Very Impressive! Their technical prowess was only outmatched by their impactful messages.

Slamdance Film #1
“Coroner To The Stars”

Recounts the life of Dr. Thomas Noguchi, the famous coroner of Los Angeles who performed autopsies of some of most infamous celebrity deaths.

Very interesting drama arises due to Dr. Noguchi’s personality & nationality. Keep an eye out for this one!

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(1) “3:10 to Yuma”

I was surprised at how much I loved this film. I guess in the back of my mind I thought “they must have remade it because the first one wasn’t very good”…. that makes no sense. Great plot. Glenn Ford was amazing!

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(2) “Red River”

This is one of the BIGGEST FEELING westerns ever. Not only in terms of its plot, but in its cinematography & themes. Feels Big Budget. There is some moral ambiguity in its messaging, but that’s what keept me interested.

Cinematography Shoutout of the Day. “In the Mood for Love”.

DP: Christopher Doyle & Mark Lee Ping-Bin

Reasons:

The color harmony of Red around #b41618. The contrast with the Blacks. The Red glow from the curtains on her neck. The skin tones under blue light. The Actress. The makeup 💄

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(3) “Ride Lonesome”

This is the quintessential Budd Beotticher & Randolph Scott movie. It encapsulates what makes these films great… the locations, the characters, and the way Beotticher slowly reveals plot are at their peak here

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(4) “Buchanan Rides Alone”

This was the surprise of the list for me and I think it’s very underrated. The characters, the ever-progressing plot, and a creative shootout scene all make for a fun and quintessential lonesome cowboy film.

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(5) “Stagecoach”

This is one of the most important & groundbreaking westerns ever. The amazing cast of characters makes it feel like the “Guardians of the Galaxy” of the 1930’s. It still has one of the best shot action scenes of all time

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(6) “Forty Guns”

Barbara Stanwyck is, once again, a Badass Boss Lady, leading 40 men. And the camera work in this film is fantastic. There is still a lingering presence of slight misogyny, but for it’s time this movie was groundbreaking.

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(7) “McCabe & Mrs. Miller”

The town that this western takes place in is muddy and wet, but it’s also comforting and I wanna live there. Altman knows how to FILM things. But I like his other acclaimed film’s plots and characters more.

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(8) “The Gunfighter”

This is a great “character study” of a Western. The plot reminds me of “High Noon”, while the themes remind me of “The Shootist”. But I am taking points off because of an anticlimactic ending.

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(9) “The Furies”

This movie is a wild mix of feminism and misogyny! Barbara Stanwyck is incredible in her role as a badass boss lady, but her love interest is the worst love interest I’ve ever seen. Very interesting plot.

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(10) “The Tall T”

That’s 3 Budd Boetticher movies at the bottom of this list, but that doesn’t mean they’re bad! I enjoyed them all! This film has great performances but felt like a really good episode of bonanza to me.

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(11) “Decision at Sundown”

Another Budd Boetticher & Randolph Scott Western that feels simple on the surface, but the way Boetticher reveals new plot details as the story progresses is masterful. Still, not my favorite on this list.

🎬Ranking Viggo Mortensen’s 12 Criterion Closet Picks:

(12) “Comanche Station”

Overall solid Western starring Randolph Scott. Budd Beotticher is extremely good at creating interesting movies out of simple plots and efficient locations. However, this film is VERY similar to “Ride Lonesome”
