Inquiring minds read on When KCA was incorporated in 1960, the founders included in the bylaws a requirement that there would be membership meeting on the third Tuesday of the odd months. So in 2017 when the Planning Department announced the new website was up as part of community outreach for So Maui, we were on our way On our way, but at a very slow pace. In 2022 The Planning Dept held an "open house" offering their version of the So Maui Community Plan to be offered to the 13 member Community Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC).

11/24/25 # For many years Maui residents had no easy way to dispose of hazardous waste. That changed at a KCA general membership meeting. A KCA director mentioned this lacking to that current Mayor., and the nasty result being some hazmat was simply dumped in numerous locations! That public interaction resulted in an annual collection event, and here we see the upcoming one will be on Jan 18.

The numbers vary depending on the source, but according to the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project there are over 500,000 cats on Maui. According to Maui Humane Society, around 40,000 of these are feral cats that are damaging the ecosystem and hurting native species of birds.

Maui Humane Society has entered a Lifesaving Protocol Crisis Response as the shelter’s dog population has exceeded safe capacity. The organization is working urgently to find homes for dogs who face medical or behavioral challenges requiring long shelter stays. Any dogs who are not adopted or transferred by October 30, 2025, will be humanely euthanized.

10/10/25 #kihei #bikeable #community Since the last century, KCA has advocated for a walkable/bikeable community. There has been lots of government talk, but very little walk ( or cycle). This website is full of action taken over the past twenty years to promote a bike path along the makai edge of the community park; the Waipuilani Park path was all set to proceed, until it was withdrawn!

The work is expected to be completed by Oct. 10. The Maui News/Gary Kubota State transportation officials are close to finishing dredging work for Keahuaiwi Stream, where following a January storm culverts were plugged with mud as runoff water flowed over the road at North Kihei Road and Maui Veterans Highway.
