The older I get the more I realize how fucking weird my life is. Like how did I unintentionally turn into an urban cryptid.

The Dems have used much of their allotted time to call for restoring the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights, which is responsible for making sure universities are responding to discrimination. Trump officials have shut down 7 of 12 of its regional offices and fired nearly half its staff.

Fascinating to hear President Manuel say the OCR has been helpful in understanding the role of enforcing civil rights on campus. The DePaul administration definitely didn't understand the rights of students when they declined to investigate sexual harassment until I reported to OCR in 2022.
Some Jewish faculty and students say lawmakers are using antisemitism and this hearing as a cover for cracking down on academic freedom. They point to past antisemitic actions made by the GOP committee members, including quoting Hitler.

The information landscape in the United States has reached a crisis point.

Billionaires and corporations are using the media outlets they control to curry favor with Trump.

The only way to fight back is to build out independent media.

Hi. Hello. Just reminding everyone that defending the Department of Education also destroys the oversight of students' civil rights in schools. Sincerely, someone who directly benefited from those protections.

I'm not going to wave my summa cum laude degree in international studies or my academic research on Christian Nationalism in the air. But the use of the presidency as a safe haven from prosecution is a characteristic of dictatorships, not democracies.

The ever present irony of working in publishing is that you're working in a field you love but you don't usually have the energy afterwards to do the writing.

In other news, I'll be getting not enough sleep tonight in favor of working on my WIP that I've restarted a dozen times in the last 2 years.

Just to be clear, in one day the judicial branch effectively ceded oversight power to the executive branch and suggested it's willing to uphold infringement on the first amendment rights of everyday Americans. Just so we all know where we stand.
